Snowblink released their album Returning Current last September in Canada and now the rest of the world will be able to hear what Exclaim! calls “a blissful ride, sounds as the world does when you’re underwater: soft and calm”.

The new virtual reality video for “Feel Like A Man” sees its screen debut in Marfa, TX today at the Marfa Myths Festival where Snowblink will be performing along with Perfume Genius, Roky Erickson, Weyes Blood and more. The video, directed by Sam Fleischner, was made during the US election week in Brooklyn with a crew of around 30 people - 90% of whom were women. When the video was made “It was a week of hate crimes and fear, where women had to stomach a misogynist taking his seat as the president elect,” says Snowblink’s Daniela Gesundheit. “Many of the women on the set were heartbroken, afraid, angry. We came together with a common purpose and created a ritual – a surrealist futuristic virtual reality seance wherein twelve dancers undergo a deep transformation over the course of a dinner banquet. With the camera positioned at the center of the banquet table, the viewer stands surrounded by these women, often encountering intense or compassionate eye contact. The piece is intimate and gives the viewer a sense of being a part of something private and transformative.”

Gesundheit described the impetus for her song “Feel Like A Man” to Kurt Anderson on WNYC’s Studio 360 when the band visited last year: “It was a response to a sense of masculinity burnout – an exhaustion from years of being a woman ‘in drag’ energetically, putting on an armor of masculine energy in order to succeed.” It brings to mind Sen. Elizabeth Warren's recent actions on the Senate floor, or the current zeitgeist of women and men confronting and dismantling patriarchal systems. Many people feel poised to construct and embrace new models, but it takes an otherworldly resilience to get through this current state of the old systems crumbling, often violently. “Feel Like A Man” is an anthem for this moment - a moment of staring down violence without blinking, while maintaining the pliability, empathy, and dignity necessary to move in an uncharted direction.

Returning Current, is an unflinching study of human relationships – to self, to other, and to Other, and to the threat or actuality of losing those unrepeatable prizes. The lead single “How Now” featuring backing vocals from Feist, earned airplay across Canada and was accompanied by a spellbinding video directed by multi-award winning Scott Cudmore.

The duo of Daniela Gesundheit and Dan Goldman were joined in studio for the creation of Returning Current was co-producer Robbie Lackritz (Feist, Bahamas), and a cast of acclaimed musicians including Leslie Feist, Owen Pallett, Barbara Gruska (Fiona Apple, Jenny Lewis, Ray LaMontagne), Johnny Spence (Tegan and Sara), Thom Gill, Ariel Engle (AroarA), Steven Foster (Doldrums), Felicity Williams (Bahamas), Philipe Melanson (Rufus Wainwright), Mika Posen (Timber Timbre), and many others.

TOPS ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM

SUGAR AT THE GATE DUE JUNE 2 VIA ARBUTUS RECORDS

For Sugar At The Gate, their third and most ambitious album to date, Montreal's TOPS peaced out to LA. They lived and recorded at ‘Glamdale’, a mini-mansion and former brothel located in the Jewel City, Glendale, CA. Due June 2 on Arbutus Records, the unassuming record unfolds slowly, taking time to reveal itself. Like nearly everything TOPS does, multiple meanings overlap with the album's title referring to orgasm, but also to carrot chasing, gatekeeping, and the social contract.

Vocalist-songwriter Jane Penny, at this point one of the most distinctive vocalists of her generation, took time during the recording learning how to drive in the Forest Lawn Cemetery parking lot. "Living in LA was living out a teenage fantasy, living with your band and practicing in the garage. It was also the first time we've ever had that much space to make music. I took the experience of living LA as a challenge to make music that I know is real to me, in the sense of it feeling true and containing true feelings, but also recordings of great songs, the real thing."

Jane Penny and David Carriere (guitarist-songwriter) contributed to the album's lyrics as much separately as together. Both their perspectives are heartfelt, with Penny's sometimes cryptic lyrics betraying something of her unconscious.

Layers of sarcasm and sincerity seem to enfold the group like flower petals. Irrepressible jokers in conversation, their album's vinyl download codes come folded up inside drug baggies. TOPS' flawless musicianship and profound grasp of pop fundamentals are the surest sign that at the core, it's all as real as it sounds.

All of TOPS recordings have been produced by the band, who have self recorded the majority of their work to date. Riley Fleck's distinct and controlled drumming style is key to the arrangements on Sugar at the Gate. A sensitivity in his playing and strong sense of discretion is a distinguishing feature of TOPS' sound.

“The essence of the record is to draw emotions that above all feel human within the context of dance music. I want it to be celebratory of all that we feel and do and experience - the beautiful, the good, and the bad.” - Jacques Greene

“True” comes ahead of this week’s release of Jacques Greene’s debut album Feel Infinite, due out March 10 (digital) / March 24 (vinyl) via Arts & Crafts, and this bittersweet single sees How To Dress Well reunited with Jacques Greene, following their 2014 collaboration, On Your Side. “True” was written in sessions together in London last Summer and mixed in Atlanta by Alex Tumay – the engineer behind a raft of new hip hop including Young Thug, Travis Scott, and Future.

Jacques Greene makes music to evoke utopian ideas of dance music - music about the club, as well as for the club. On “True” he’s enlisted old friend and collaborator Tom Krell (aka How To Dress Well) to deliver one of his most compelling performances to date: riding the beat with syncopated delivery the main vocal is left raw – a live take surrounded by flickering autotune and reverb. As with much of Jacques Greene’s music it respectfully denies the tropes of a single genre and comes out as something unique, honest and idiosyncratic.

Recently nominated for a JUNO Award for Dance Recording of the Year, Jacques Greene is the enigmatic, young artist who broke out of a generation of independent electronic labels Uno, 3024, Night Slugs, and LuckyMe as a genre-defining producer and DJ via 2011’s “Another Girl” – one of Pitchfork’s Songs of the Decade, 2013 favourite “On Your Side” ft. How To Dress Well as well as 2016’s club anthem and recent JUNO Award nominated track “You Can’t Deny”. Jacques Greene crafted a musical blueprint that inspired a generation who were raised at the intersection of contemporary music in the 90s: hip hop, RnB, house and techno.

PRE-ORDER FEEL INFINITE HERE

At its heart, Feel Infinite is a record about the utopian idea of club culture - music about the club, as well as for the club in and of itself. Written over the course of two years, this debut album is the purest, most personal expression of the Jacques Greene sound created by the born and raised Montrealer, renowned for collaborating and remixing Tinashe, Radiohead, Sampha, andShlohmo. Present on the record are Jacques Greene RnB vocal chops that he popularised in new club music - but here he returns to their original purpose: his own reference to Masters Of Work. Where they drew from their primary influence in disco, JG draws upon his own formative chart music.
