At the JUNO Awards this past weekend, Jeremy Dutcher was honoured with the award for Indigenous Music Album Of The Year for his debut LP Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa. Together with his band, Dutcher also performed as part of the Sunday Awards broadcast on CBC. In addition to the words he spoke at the Awards Gala after accepting his JUNO, Dutcher would also like to say the following:
Full of gratitude to all those who have supported me in this journey. I would like to acknowledge all of the other nominees in the Indigenous music category (Elisapie, Snotty Nose Rez Kids, Leonard Sumner, Northern Cree) for their artistry and contributions to the musical topography of this land.
To my fans and people who are following this work, you give me the light and love required to share these messages.
To all my collaborators who made this evening possible, I love you all. Woliwon to my band, (Blanche Israël, Greg Harrison, Jonathan MacArthur, Blake Pouliot and Aleda Deroche). Woliwon to Samaqani Cocahq for the amazing background visuals and to Zoff and Luxx for their amazing collaborative red carpet design!
A note on representation: as a young person, I had watched the JUNOs many times and have not ever seen myself reflected on such a stage. To be that reflection for others is a responsibility and an immense honour. Let’s continue to make and hold space for under-represented voices. Let’s walk in beauty. Together//Mawiw

Beginning March 22, Dutcher will continue to support Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa with tour dates across North America, Europe, and The UK. Full tour listings can be found below.
Dutcher, who also won the 2018 Polaris Music Prize, is a classically trained operatic tenor and composer who takes every opportunity to blend his Wolastoq First Nation roots into the music he creates, blending distinct musical aesthetics that shape-shift between classical, traditional, and pop to form something entirely new. Dutcher’s debut release, Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa, involves the rearrangement of early 1900s wax cylinder field recordings from his community. “Many of the songs were lost because our musical tradition was suppressed by the Canadian government. I'm doing this work as there's only about a hundred Wolastoqey speakers left. It's crucial that we're using our language because, if you lose the language, you're losing an entire distinct way of experiencing the world.”
