Today, JUNO Award winning songwriter Rose Cousins is sharing the new video for “White Flag” from her latest, internationally acclaimed album, Natural Conclusion. Written with K.S. Rhoads, “White Flag” is a song of the aftermath – the empty house and the lingering feeling of connection with someone who is now gone. "I envisioned this video to have epic drone shots of water and landscape and to have a theme of white objects to emphasize that epic feeling of empty, alone and surrender,” says Cousins. “I enlisted the help of talented Halifax filmmaker / musician Shehab Illyas who had the idea of me singing lying down and combining it with superimposed shots from the drone and other close ups of terrain. I love the way it turned out."

“White Flag” premiered earlier today via NPR who claims “Cousins has a disarmingly fluid vocal tone and an ability to convey the most internalized emotions — disappointment, grief, resolve, forbearance — without an ounce of fuss.”

Out now via Outside Music, The Guardian says of Rose Cousins’ Natural Conclusion, “…her voice draws you in until you realize you are at the heart of the storm,” while The Washington Post notes that "When Rose Cousins sings she soars and swoops, never to show off but always in service to the song." No Depression furthers, “Cousins and Henry have created an emotional landscape full of beauty and conquest. It is formidable.”

Cousins is currently on the road in support of Natural Conclusion throughout North America. Full tour dates can be found below.

On Natural Conclusion, Rose Cousins steps boldly forward, a fully mature writer and artist in her next great stride. Cousins enlisted Grammy Award winning producer Joe Henry for the recording of Natural Conclusion. She and Henry each gathered trusted colleagues and met in Toronto. They were joined in studio by engineer Ryan Freeland, drummer Jay Bellerose, bassist David Pitch (Bonnie Raitt, Billy Bragg), pianist Aaron Davis (Holly Cole), and guitar player Gord Tough (Kathleen Edwards, Sarah Harmer). Also lending their talents to the recording were touring mates Asa Brosius (Anais Mitchell, Heavy Blinkers), and Zachariah Hickman (Josh Ritter, Ray Lamontagne). Kinley Dowling (Hey Rosetta!) added strings in the studio and joined the choir that also included Hickman and longtime friends Jill Barber, Caroline Brookes (Good Lovelies), and Miranda Mullholland (Great Lake Swimmers).

Tei Shi will release her highly anticipated debut album Crawl Space via Arts & Crafts on March 31. Today, she debuts the video for "How Far," the second single released from Crawl Space. The video premiered via Dazed, who noted, "the greatest gift of Tei Shi, born Valerie Teicher, might be her natural ability to transmute personal stories into sticky pop hooks."

"How Far" was directed by Brooklyn production studio DREAMTIGER, who commented on the video, saying, "Relationships often feel like getting hit by car. It's about a relentless force always following you, always dragging you back, and sometimes you don't know whether you can survive." Dreamtiger also said that the video was "secretly inspired by Z, a film by Costa-Gavras and an unreleased Kanye music video by Steve McQueen."

The FADER premiered the single, calling it a "sultry power ballad" and writing "Tei Shi's acrobatic vocals shine once again on ‘How Far,’... The track – which pairs gut-wrenching lyrics like If it pleases you to see me struggle/ I will with dreamy guitars and buzzing production – explores the thin line between love and destruction. And it'll stick with you."

Born in Buenos Aires, Teicher spent her childhood in Argentina and Colombia before moving to Vancouver and Montreal, cultivating a strong artistic sensibility from a young age. During her studies at Massachusetts' Berklee College of Music she began to realize her full potential as a performer, and by the time she moved to New York City after graduation, the Tei Shi project was born.

Crawl Space documents Tei Shi's transformation from the cautious and curious new kid on the block to a confident, self-possessed and buzz worthy artist. Written and recorded over a year and a half, the album traces a much wider arc, from Tei Shi's earliest musical explorations to this, her first long player. Growth is never easy, though, and if the title makes the process sound difficult, even claustrophobic, that's because it was. In fact, there is a palpable physicality surrounding this record, and it reveals itself everywhere: from the album's song titles - “Keep Running,” “Lift Me” – to its rhythms, to its astonishing cover art. Constant motion is a fact of life. A real, physical crawl space fits only one person and demands that person move forward, out and through it. Tei Shi's debut evokes that feeling and the experience of centering oneself, changing focus.

"Tei Shi may have been a long time coming, but "Keep Running" feels like the debut of an artist properly establishing her musical identity with plenty of potential for success." - V Magazine

""Keep Running," a silky slip of R&B pop, a little Jesse Ware, a little Solange. The video, directed by Agostina Gálvez, which you can watch below, features the Colombian-born singer back to brunette, in various satiny numbers, curving her body with the sensual ease with which she delivers her melodies." - Noisey

SNOOP DOGG REMIXES BADBADNOTGOOD'S "LAVENDER” FT. KAYTRANADA

ARTWORK BY JOE COOL

Snoop Dogg remixed BADBADNOTGOOD's "Lavender” (Ft. Kaytranada). The original track is from BBNG's recent album, IV, and now has a new verse added by Snoop. The collaboration came about naturally after Snoop first heard the instrumental "Lavender" when an engineer was playing it before a studio session. Enamored with the track, Snoop quickly cut a verse to it and the rest is history. "I love what they do, shit feels so real. And when I heard the instrumental on their album I had to do it," explains Snoop. Artwork for the single was created by Joe Cool, the original artist behind the iconic Doggystyle artwork.

PRAISE FOR BADBADNOTGOOD

"kicking the jazz world's ass back into relevancy." - VICE

"a brash attitude and youthful energy winning out over technique." - NPR

"...even given the fairly proud lineage of wild musical juxtaposition, these kids are
making waves." - The Guardian

amazing..."  - Gilles Peterson

About BADBADNOTGOOD:

Like musical theatre and scripted television, jazz and hip-hop are uniquely, undeniably North American art forms. Though the latter genre was born out of funk and disco in the late 1970s, many of its landmark artists embody the ethos of jazz: loose, visceral, instinctive. Some hip-hop acts – A Tribe Called Quest, or more recently Kendrick Lamar – have successfully repurposed jazz, but the older genre has seldom made successful inroads into new generations of rap fans. And that's what makes BADBADNOTGOOD, the four-piece, Toronto-bred jazz outfit that has melded jazz and instrumental hip-hop into something elusive, something altogether their own, so unique.

On their latest full-length effort, IV, BBNG decide to expand their universe, which was already one of the most compelling, labyrinthine worlds in pop music today. Saxophonist Leland Whitty, a long-time collaborator, joins Chester Hansen, Matthew Tavares, and Alexander Sowinski on a full-time basis; for the first time, guest vocalists are welcomed into the fold. Some artists find collaboration stressful and cluttering, but BBNG simply seems freer to chase down creative rabbit holes than ever before.

The effect is apparent immediately. See "Lavender", a collaboration with the Montreal-based producer Kaytranada, which pairs delicate, skittering production with a punishing low end. Or take the virtuosic closer, which underscores superb performances by Whitty and Tavares with a grand swell of strings. On "Hyssop of Love", upstart Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins moves languidly, stretching out taunts ("I heard your plug was drrrrry") before he snaps upright ("Never needed no dollars to prove worth"). The result is not just BBNG's most expansive, most dynamic effort to date, but their best. Lest anyone think the group is only concerned with blurring genre lines, the title track alone is enough to ensure the most discerning jazz purists will have to respect BBNG's technical chops.

IV is a master class in mood. The opening three-song suite – "And That, Too.", "Speaking Gently", and the Samuel T. Herring-assisted "Time Moves Slow" – is a slow, slinking creep, like moving uneasily through an abandoned house. And while BBNG explores different tones on subsequent tracks, that feeling--the search, the push for the unknown--is the prevailing theme. "Chompy's Paradise" is peaceful and serene, but ends on an uncertain note, unresolved. Like most great artists before them, the quartet understands that it's more important to raise questions than to answer them.
