Today, Winnipeg’s Super Duty Tough Work is releasing the extended version of their 2023 mission statement-esque debut full-length Paradigm Shift. Available everywhere, Paradigm Shift Extended expands on that thought by releasing the full instrumental version of the record, accompanied by one b-side, “Watershedding”, and two previously released tracks from their debut record, Studies in Grey.

The group is also pulling back the curtain and sharing the behind-the-scenes documentary, ‘Making Of Paradigm Shift’. “It’s interesting to watch this documentary now, as it was shot almost 3 years ago,” notes Brendan Grey. “It definitely captures the feeling and vibe of those particular moments. It’s pretty pure in some regards. It’s funny to reflect on that time now, given how much time has passed and how some things have changed, within the world and within the group. Glad we were able to capture all that at that time because, as I said on ‘Watershedding’, ‘things will never be the same’.”

MORE ABOUT PARADIGM SHIFT EXTENDED
Switching focus from the lyrics to the music, the instrumental record offers listeners a chance  to really absorb the rhythmic and harmonic ideas laid down by the band, because this is a  band after all. The static-heavy syncopation of drummers Brendan Grey and Kevin Waters, with low-end support of bassist Ashley Au, only to be further embellished by bursts of sax and guitar from Olivier Macharia and Gaby Ocejo, is at the forefront of this release, as listeners are led to embrace the often overlooked foundations for the searing commentary that typically dominates Super Duty reviews.

In addition to the instrumental tracks, a lost cut from the Paradigm Shift sessions is featured.  “Watershedding” is a smooth yet haunting, forward-moving yet relaxed offering, filled in typical  Super Duty Tough Work fashion with sparse yet tasteful staticky piano and lyrics so layered,  you’ll be looking for the footnotes to catch every reference. Navigating a new era,  “Watershedding” finds frontman Brendan Grey drawing on the past as he tries to make sense of  the present, lamenting on everything from mind reading algorithms and corporations  supporting genocide, to the effect all of the above has on one’s psyche. Yet despite the despair, Grey maintains his wit (“My style is like the Black Adder meets the Black Panthers”), his focus (“Each move made with a purpose, stay watching like closed circuits…”) and his commitment to his listeners and the art (“So when I rhyme it’s sincerely yours”), all while continuing to show that he is the master of paying homage to his influences and citing his sources.

References to Clyde Stubblefield and James Brown are particularly poignant, as the drums on this cut (played by Grey) are caught somewhere between quintessential Stubblefield (think Funky Drummer) and a more contemporary J Dilla stutter. The crunchy keys and muffled  bass are accentuated by the supremely tasteful guitar playing of JUNO Award winning jazz guitarist Joceyln Gould, and the airy vocal harmonies of Afro-Iraqi musician Ahmed Moneka, who’s voice is distant yet felt, positioned and mixed to sound more like a sample from an old record, than a live recording. Static, piano loops, thumbing kick drums, trashy hi-hats, no real chorus, hopelessness, optimism and of course, a Nas reference?! Sounds like Super Duty Tough Work.

This Friday Polaris Music Prize nominated group, Super Duty Tough Work will unleash their new album, Paradigm Shift. A mission statement of sorts, Paradigm Shift is a marker in time, a testament to Super Duty Tough Work’s constantly evolving worldview and assertion of commitment to their art and the traditions from which they’re born.

Alongside the album release tomorrow, Super Duty Tough Work are sharing the new album single “Dirty Hands”. Taking its name from the infamous Parisian underground graffiti video series of the late 90s and early 2000s, “Dirty Hands” is crash course in rhyming as the track sees Brendan Grey doing what he does best: getting loose, talking his shit and subtly paying homage to the artists, writers, creatives and thinkers that paved the way for him to be where he is.

In addition to being an encyclopaedic reflection on Grey’s influences, “Dirty Hands” also speaks to those who abuse the culture for social capital and personal gain, while throwing shade at Grey for his ideas, only to still listen to Super Duty Tough Work upon release: ‘Most of these fucks just chasing fame with no respect for tradition / talking that shit about B, like ‘He thinks he’s all wisdom’ / But when my shit drops, you know they look for us like missing children’.”

Referencing everyone from the Black Panthers, to New York born, Paris based graffiti artist turned fine art painter, JonOne (Jon Porello), to far-left British journalist Ash Sarkar, and (Nigerian) painter Kehinde Wiley, amongst others, this track is a mix of Grey saluting his heroes, while positioning himself amongst them as a relevant contributor or torch carrier in the same canons. And just in case it wasn’t clear, Grey still ‘Doesn’t sweat these little Mileys tryna vibe me’.

MORE ABOUT PARADIGM SHIFT
Despite being only ten tracks, this record can be boiled down to having two distinct sides: party and revolution. On one hand, Paradigm Shift has a heavy dose of the usual witty, provocative, carefree lyricism we’ve come to expect from frontman Brendan Grey, mixed with some catchy hooks and melodic choruses sure to become ear-worms. On the other hand, the underlying themes of anti-imperialism, anti-capitalism, celebrity/idol worship and climate catastrophe can only be made to be so fun, making for an interesting dichotomy as the listener is pushed and pulled in a few very different directions throughout. The content can get pretty heavy, but in the same breath, it’s composed and presented in such a stylish and effortless manner, proving that a spoonful of honey (and a couple zoots) really does help the medicine go down. Cloaked at times in the dusty sample sound of golden era hip hop (p.s., it’s all live), while in other places utilizing a more contemporary approach such as trap hi-hats, House synths and 808 bass pads, this record clearly exemplifies the group’s growth, as we see them cover new ground both thematically and sonically. The heavy content and ear-pleasing soundscapes are so well put together that you don’t always realize that you’re listening to songs often exploring the symptoms and results of what can only be described as settler-colonialism and predatory/late stage capitalism/neoliberal economics, while also calling for the hanging of Elon Musk and redistribution of all stolen wealth hoarded by the billionaire class.

“I mean, it’s hard to summarize what this album is about, because it touches on so many different things,” says Grey. “Thematically, you could pick any one to explore, depending on what speaks to you. On one track I’m talking about how I’m the best rapper (typical), while in the next I’m calling for a complete systems overhaul. Then we’re talking about navigating depression, then Marisolle is talking about stepping in the party, looking fresh and ready to get busy. Then it’s back to straight rapping. It’s all related. I’d say though, generally, it all falls in line with our themes of ‘resistance-based debauchery’ and internationalism. Opposing the homicidal ruling class the planet is forced to endure, while at the same time having fun, celebrating the wins and each other, and indulging in joy when possible. This record really is meant to be a comfort measure for all victims of capitalism. Which is everyone (laughs).”

MORE ABOUT SUPER DUTY TOUGH WORK
Inspired by the dirty jazz loop sound of 90s east coast hip hop, Super Duty Tough Work are the live incarnation of hip hop culture's quintessential era, appearing as a band (we know, stay with us) but manifesting a sound that’s more akin to something straight out of an MPC or SP-404 sampler. Revered for their methodically curated sets, SDTW mixes laidback rap action and razor-sharp delivery with effortless loops sewn together with surprising transitions, keeping audiences on their feet and salivating in anticipation as to what’s coming next. Simply put: internationalism is the theme, liberation through hedonism is the dream, and satisfaction is guaranteed from the team whose specialty is taking audiences on a journey through a culture where loops are slayed and jewels are the tools of the trade.

After being a live show only act for years, the group released their debut EP Studies in Grey, in September 2019, followed by a cross country tour. Eight months later Studies in Grey received a Polaris Prize nod in the form of a Long List nomination, followed shortly thereafter with a nomination for a Western Canadian Music Award in the category of Best Rap & Hip Hop Artist. The Polaris nod makes SDTW the first Manitoba based hip hop act to be nominated for the prize.
