“Like the moon in its title, Super Blood Wolf Moon is a revelation that blushes with life. …brazen, unruly and consoling” - Exclaim!

Today, the beautiful, brash, and bold Kristi Lane Sinclair is releasing her sophomore album, Super Blood Wolf Moon, via Red Music Rising. The Haida/Cree artist is also sharing album track, “LANDBACK”, which she says is “a dichotomy of the way the land is perceived, rigid and beautiful; delivered in two movements. The first reflects the history, telling story of land ownership and power flexes. It was written in Banff inspired by the Fairmont Hotel, that was built on the backs of internment camps. There was not a lot of interest in rich Indigenous history except for a parade of the local Indigenous for tourists.

“When I was done spitting and growling, I looked up through the skylights and saw the moonlit mountains. I began to sing to the ancestors to let them know we are here and feel their strength. They are our power beyond measure and live on within us. It brought me peace.”

MORE ABOUT SUPER BLOOD WOLF MOON
Sinclair spent three years writing Super Blood Wolf Moon’s twelve songs. Already the longest time she’s ever spent on an album before unveiling it to the world, production was delayed, though not entirely halted, by the pandemic, prolonging the process even further. But in what seems an act of prescience, Super Blood Wolf Moon arrives at exactly the moment it needs to: the album’s layered thematic dualities—anger and love, optimism and despair—express the nuances so many are learning to embrace as they heal.

“I wrote this album wanting to find common ground for all who experience womanhood,” Sinclair explains. “I don’t want my identity to be that of a victim. I wanted Super Blood Wolf Moon to be a true account of how it feels to endure domestic violence and PTSD. It’s not only about what I’ve been through, but also what I’ve learned from women I’ve encountered throughout my life over the years.”

Produced by JUNO Award-nominated Terra Lightfoot, engineered by Jill Zimmerman and mastered by Grammy Award-winner Emily Lazar, an essential part of the recording process was assembling an all-woman team, from the studio band to Sinclair’s producer and engineer. The album’s recording sessions at Jukasa Studios on Six Nations Territory in Ohsweken, Ontario and Arc Studios in Hannon, Ontario featured drummer Dani Nash, bassist Anna Ruddick, keyboardist Robin Hatch and string players Praise Lam and Blanche Israël

“Kristi and I picked the best musicians we knew, people we thought could bring this tender piece of her story to life with precision and with great feeling. Most of those people also happened to be women,” says Lightfoot.

“Kristi hadn’t really played guitar since having both hands broken in an incident of domestic violence a year before we started recording…so even the physical act of her putting her fingers onto a fretboard and strumming after all of that…really, it was an act of rebellion…against everyone and everything that tried to break her. I am so proud of where we brought these songs. I think it’s a perfect snapshot of her healing process and her resilience as a person and as a musician.”

Sinclair’s well-polished, brutally honest songwriting delves into far too common experiences of violence, surfacing to breathe with softness and grit. She describes her songwriting approach as “visceral,” with music and lyrics written together in the moment. Super Blood Wolf Moon combines severity and symphony, weaving sharply gorgeous string sections alongside the howl of heavy riffs.

Sinclair released her first album, the self-produced I Love You, in 2010, and followed it with 2013’s By The Sea Alone. In 2015, she released Dark Matter, which earned the Best Rock Album honour at the 2017 Indigenous Music Awards. The making of that album was documented in a six-part APTN series, Face The Music. Next, The Ability to Judge Distance was released in 2018.

The beautiful, brash, and bold Haida/Cree artist Kristi Lane Sinclair is today sharing “Heartbites”, the second single from her forthcoming sophomore album Super Blood Wolf Moon, due out April 14, 2023 via Red Music Rising. A mirror opposite to first single, “Break”, “Heartbites” features an ear worm chorus alongside catchy danceable, 80’s inspired Indie-Pop sheen over decidedly darker lyrics.

“Heartbites” is a song about “not being satisfied / treated well in your relationship,” says Sinclair. “Not getting what you need from it leads to missing a part of your life that doesn’t exist anymore. Maybe that life would serve you better? Enticing thoughts = disco danceable beat, lol.”

The beautiful, brash, and bold Haida/Cree artist Kristi Lane Sinclair is today sharing the new single, “Break ft. Kelly Fraser”, her first new music to be released Red Music Rising. Sinclair’s well-polished, brutally honest songwriting delves into far too common experiences of violence, surfacing to breathe with softness and grit. She describes her songwriting approach as “visceral,” with music and lyrics written together in the moment. Her songs combine severity with symphony, weaving sharply gorgeous string sections alongside the howl of heavy riffs.

On the new single, she says “‘Break’ is a very different kind of arrangement. It doesn’t really sound like anything I’ve ever done before, there’s mostly just this pulse, this heartbeat of drums and of voices chanting. This is one example of a song where I asked the girls in the studio to portray ancestral voices in their singing within the song’s narrative. It was our chance to incorporate the amazing voice of Kelly Fraser, whose throat singing runs throughout the track.”
