Jade Hairpins move in and out of reverie in the rose-colored video for new song “Dolly Dream”, bringing you into their world of joyful movement, wide-open spaces, and sunny yesterdays and tomorrows. This piece of musical clockwork is laden with Fender Rhodes keyboard, analog synths, layered strings, and soaring harmonies which all set the stage for the reveal of their debut full-length Harmony Avenue on May 29 via Arts & Crafts.

The music video, featuring nostalgic footage of Jade Hairpins across three continents, was co-directed by the Jade Hairpins masterminds Mike Haliechuk and Jonah Falco. As Falco explains, “‘Dolly Dream’ is a song about searching—not necessarily something you lack and have to ‘find,’ but grabbing hold of that ‘something’ you’ve always had. This search finds a connection within solitude, and within the crowd.”

Each Jade Hairpins song was conceived in studio, then edited and crafted by Haliechuk and Falco to become Harmony Avenue. Each approach was different—first focusing on creating stories for character-based writing, and then on less absurd emotional/thoughtful/personal reflection.

Arriving on all shores today is “(Don’t Break My) Devotion”, the new single from Jade Hairpins’ forthcoming album Harmony Avenue, out May 29 via Arts & Crafts. As bandleader Jonah Falco will tell you, it’s a technicolor burst through the plastic age, outlying the exhaustion of bad decisions and failures to communicate, all wrapped up in a cornucopia of bubblegum, new wave, disco, and post-punk.

Directed by the band’s Mike Haliechuk, the accompanying music video showcases the London group’s full line-up for the first time (rounded out by Tamsin M Leach and Jack Goldstein) in an absurdly comedic conversation of instructions where meaning and physical language get mismatched and reinterpreted like a body remix of obliterative proportions.

Up and down Harmony Avenue, you’ll hear pop foraging with analog acoustics and electronic landscaping. It’s a collection of songs written and recorded in real time by Falco and Haliechuk, members of Fucked Up and the masterminds behind their recent record Dose Your Dreams. In fact, Harmony Avenue was originally conceived as a potential addendum to that album’s universe, but the end result was more exciting than Falco and Haliechuk anticipated and deserved its own spotlight.

“(Don’t Break My) Devotion” is the appropriately large follow-up to the melody flood of Harmony Avenue’s lead single “J Terrapin”

After pulling the curtain back last month, as well as a premiere lap around the UK, Jade Hairpins present their music video for new song “J Terrapin”. The energetic and absurdist how-do-you-do serves as the opening song from the London group’s debut album Harmony Avenue, arriving May 29 via Arts & Crafts

Flood Magazine says, “‘J Terrapin’ is a two-minute, unrelenting burner sounding more than a little like the softcore punk found in Dirtnap Records’ discography. The clip for “J” doubles down on the overstimulation, presenting rapid fire lyrics and imagery filtered through the aesthetic of ’60s rock vinyl art.”

Jade Hairpins snuck onto the scene in late 2018 with a mysterious 12-inch on Merge Records and a couple of poetic sentences about hiding in trees. Arts & Crafts remained tight-lipped while touting Dose Your Dreams, a truly epic new Fucked Up album released on the same day. Fast forward to 2020, when Fucked Up drummer Jonah Falco and songwriter/guitarist Mike Haliechuk burst out of the proverbial trees with Harmony Avenue, a collection of songs written and recorded in real time. Pop foraging with analog acoustics and electronic landscaping.

As the project expanded, Falco took on frontman and main lyricist duties for the first time and built a live band based in his adopted hometown of London, England. He describes the new record as “straddling the post-post-punk of something like New Order, Scritti Politti, and Orange Juice, with a primordial sense of humour and absurdity not unlike Ian Dury and the Blockheads, Television Personalities, or the Monks.”

Each Jade Hairpins song was conceived in studio, then edited and crafted to become Harmony Avenue. Each vocal approach was different—first focusing on creating stories for character-based writing, and then on less absurd emotional/thoughtful/personal reflection. The LP was originally conceived as a potential addendum to the universe of Dose Your Dreams, but the end result was more exciting than Falco and Haliechuk anticipated and deserved its own spotlight.

The themes of Harmony Avenue mostly focus on contradictory behavior and double entendres as well as regret and control, revelation, support, and complete absurdity. Jade Hairpins are here to challenge, confound, and sparkle their way into listeners’ hearts and keep them coming back for more!
