Acclaimed dream pop duo In The Valley Below are sharing the new single, “Candy Hearts”, available now via Arts & Crafts, and unveiling the music video directed by Jon Danovic. “Candy Hearts is the story of a fun, indulgent and shallow relationship,” says Angela Mattson, “the kind of relationship that is exciting but going nowhere. Inspiration came from many past love affairs. It started with this cool, dark instrumental track where we sampled our friend’s dog growling. The sound is buried deep now, but the feel permeates. It’s dark and sweet.”

“Candy Hearts” marks the conclusion of In The Valley Below’s major North American tour supporting legendary electronic pop pioneers Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.

Founded in 2011, In The Valley Below made their full-length debut with 2014’s critically acclaimed The Belt, highlighted by the worldwide hit single, “Peaches”. The track reached the top 20 on Billboard’s “Alternative Songs” chart, prompting high profile TV performances on CBS’ The Late Show With David Letterman and TBS’ Conan. 

After three years on the road – including headline tours, festival sets at such global events as Reading/Leeds, Austin City Limits Music Festival, Pukkelpop, and Rock En Seine, and support runs alongside Cold War Kids, Tricky, and Albert Hammond Jr, to name but a few – Mendel and Mattson relocated from Los Angeles to Grand Rapids, MI, where they built a full studio in a 100-year-old house. 

There they crafted their groundbreaking sophomore LP, The Pink Chateau, joined by a feature length erotique film hailed by Brooklyn Vegan as “a dreamlike diorama of interconnected musical vignettes inspired by vintage French erotica and the faded colors of 1970s films.” A multi-media tour followed which saw In The Valley Below presenting The Pink Chateau in cinemas across America, accompanying their film by performing its score live over wireless headphones

Acclaimed dream pop duo In The Valley Below have shared an intimate and emotionally charged new single, “Lie With Me”, available now via Arts & Crafts, and an official music video directed by Uto X (a.k.a. In The Valley Below co-founder Angela Gail Mattson).

Jeffrey Jacob Mendel and Angela Gail Mattson of In The Valley Below were nothing more than friends until one MDMA-infused night when their chemistry completely changed. Less than a year later they were married and expecting a child. The couple currently lives in Grand Rapids, MI where they self-produced and recorded “Lie With Me” in their basement studio. They are still madly in love.

“‘Lie With Me’ is one of our most personal songs,” say In The Valley Below. “It’s about the night we fell head over heels for each other, even though we were both in relationships. It’s about the feelings of excitement and guilt that overwhelmed us.”

In The Valley Below has premiered their sophomore album, The Pink Chateau, via Audiofemme, prior to its release on April 26 on Arts & Crafts. The duo/couple of Angela Gail and Jeffrey Jacob wrapped a two-week tour of Alamo Drafthouses across the U.S., performing the record/score live in front of the film. The movie will screen as an official selection at the Newport Beach Film Festival tomorrow, with a digital release on Vimeo.

For In The Valley Below hardship and passion are two sides of the same coin, and romance is the only defense against a world gone mad. Almost giving up on a music career when Angela found out she was pregnant, they emerged in 2014 with a hit single, “Peaches” off their debut album The Belt. Angela and Jeffrey were swept up quickly into an unexpected whirlwind… a record deal with Capitol Records, invitations to perform on Letterman and Conan, tours with Albert Hammond Jr., Tricky, White Lies and the Cold War Kids, and festival dates from Austin City Limits to Reading and Leeds. After living on the road for several years, with child, bags were packed in LA and shipped to Grand Rapids, where a house was bought and a basement studio created.

Holing up last winter in their home studio, the resultant album, The Pink Chateau puts lie to our preconceived notions of how environment influences music. There’s a tendency to conflate an artist’s sound with their surrounding geography—be it the sun-dappled serenity of ‘70s Laurel Canyon folk-rock or the industrial pallor of Manchester post-punk. But The Pink Chateau is proof you can make sexy, urbane, tropical pop music in a Michigan basement in the dead of winter. When the duo invite you to “drink champagne in the pink chateau” on the album’s seductively funky title track, the message is clear:  paradise is wherever you want it to be.
