Today, Hildegard releases their new album Jour 1596, via Chivi Chivi. Hildegard is the musical project of Montreal-based artists and multi-instrumentalists Ouri and Helena Deland. The new album uses playful improvisation as its starting point, resulting in music that is ornate and raw, intimate, and deeply connected. Accented by delicate vocals and Ouri’s signature harp contributions, the two artists uphold the same “gradual mind meld” as noted by Pitchfork on their debut collaborative album that can only be birthed from true musical and creative alignment. The FADER praised the new record in their recent review noting it, “Succeeds at creating a sacred geometry in the angles between its jazz-inflected, avant-garde R&B,” and proclaimed the result as, “something divine.”

Speaking about the album Hildegard share, “Jour 1596 marks the contrast between the spontaneity of our first and second album. Though the process felt like a balancing act of perseverance and going tabula rasa, what made it onto the album stemmed in those unplanned, joyful moments, when playfulness came through amid the challenges of our expectations.”

Composed during yearly week-long retreats in the snowy seclusion of rural Québec, the new album is a significant departure from the spontaneous creation of their debut. While their first album emerged over just eight days, Jour 1596 was meticulously crafted over 1596 days, grappling with the challenges and expectations of following up their first effort. With contributions from Zach Frampton (piano), Christopher Edmondson (saxophone), Phil Melanson (drums) and Benja (guitar), Jour 1596 is a testament to Hildegard’s expanding soundscape, where the resilience of friendship, the joy of collaboration, and the inspiration drawn from musical legends and personal experiences resonate in each track, guiding listeners from a contemplative, reflective mood into a lighter one.

Today, Hildegard announces their new album Jour 1596 due October 18th via Chivi Chivi. Hildegard is the musical project of Montreal-based artists and multi-instrumentalists Ouri and Helena Deland. Alongside the album announcement, the duo share their first glimpse into the upcoming project with a new single “Cruel”, showcasing the musical evolution from their celebrated debut album. The new single is introduced with a commanding slap, directing attention to the duo’s imaginative harmonies and jazzy baseline. The upcoming album uses playful improvisation as its starting point, resulting in music that is ornate and raw, intimate, and deeply connected.

Speaking on the new track the pair notes, “Cruel” serves as “[a] dialogue between lovers or friends, where one seeks stability while the other is drawn towards disruption and change.” Accented by delicate vocals and Ouri’s signature harp contributions, the two artists uphold the same “gradual mind meld” as noted by Pitchfork on their debut collaborative album that can only be birthed from true musical and creative alignment.

“Jour 8” Video Still

Hildegard – electronic duo featuring experimental singer-songwriter Helena Deland and multi-instrumentalist/producer Ouri (Ourielle Auvé) – have shared a new music video for their song “Jour 8”, the atmospheric highlight from their self-titled debut album, out now via Chivi Chivi. Hildegard describe the song as “expressing the lasting outrage and trying lassitude that comes with being harassed,” adding “the video shows us reuniting in clarity after fleeing claustrophobic settings and an ominous Hummer.”

To coincide with the video, today at 2pm ET Hildegard will host a livestream performance/AMA on Reddit (r/RedditSessions).

Hildegard have also been confirmed for a February 4, 2022 headline performance at SAT in Montreal, as part of the electronic music festival MUTEK. Tickets on sale now (HERE).

Deland and Ouri recorded Hildegard over just eight days in the studio, uncovering their innate creative connection while developing an intuitive approach to composition and sound. The eight tracks on Hildegard fuse together into a sonic sphere, and are named for each day Deland and Ouri spent together. Deland’s folk background balances against Ouri’s nocturnal world of electronic and dance music. Weightless vocals and aphoristic lyrics hover over kinetic beats and throbbing bass. The meeting place sounds something like dusk, or dawn.

Throughout the album, Deland and Ouri drew inspiration from mystic, healer, composer, and visionary 12th century nun, Hildegard of Bingen. Hildegard was a woman of science, music, and spirituality, as well as a symbol of nurturing strength. In her 12th century presence, she wrote prophecies, poems, and treatises; she experienced otherworldly visions and recorded them, passing them down through generations. Deland and Ouri invoke Hildegard as a carrier of the magic they felt working with each other, the separate entity that was born as they blended together.

Ouri also released her own solo album last month, entitled Frame Of A Fauna.
