Today, Field Guide, aka Dylan MacDonald, is releasing an alternate version of his acclaimed self-titled album. Field Guide (Tape Redux) is a reimagined, stripped-down, captured-in-the-wild feeling of new arrangements that MacDonald penned while on the road in a solo capacity supporting his self-titled album which began mutating into something collectively new, different, and exciting.

Field Guide is also sharing a live performance video for album track, “Looking Back (Tape Redux)” today, a song he wrote “days before moving back home to Winnipeg from Toronto,” says MacDonald. “I’d been missing Winnipeg for months—feeling nostalgic and reflective. But all of the sudden I found myself feeling the same way about Toronto, about my apartment, about the neighbourhood, the people. It shook me up a bit, I realized that if I wasn’t careful my mind was going to keep living three months behind my body. I suppose this song is a reminder to be careful with nostalgia and to be more present day to day.”

In support of both the self-titled album and Field Guide (Tape Redux), Field Guide will be touring North America this Spring. All dates are announced and on sale here and listed below.

MORE ABOUT FIELD GUIDE (TAPE REDUX)
Through 12 songs, the album creates an identity around subtle acoustic guitar parts, laid-back drum grooves, textured and moody sonic layers, and warm-blanket vocal melodies. Following its release, Field Guide captivated a listening audience of 600K+ monthly listeners on Spotify, with over 25 million streams, tour support slots from artists JP Saxe, SMYL, Bahamas, Leif Vollebekk, and praise from outlets such as MOJO, NPR, Under the Radar and more.

Some tracks on Field Guide (Tape Redux) such as “Remember When” and “You Could Be Free” have recognizable riffs to the original versions but are more intimate and direct, without additional trappings beyond vocals and guitar. “In Love Now” uses a sparse arrangement of drum machine, fingerpicked electric bass, and MacDonald’s nimble and soulful falsetto to achieve a bright and positive interpretation.

Of “In Love Now” MacDonald wrote, "During the deep pandemic times I think that a lot of people found themselves catching up on a lot of overdue interior work which was both a really good thing but also quite overwhelming. This song came out of the desire for balance — wanting to continue to work through things but also yearning to get outside and enjoy the sunshine."

“Without much of a plan I went over to my pal Kris Ulrich’s place and two days later we had a record that I am incredibly proud of,” MacDonald explains on recording Field Guide (Tape Redux). “We recorded everything live with no overdubs to Kris’ recently purchased Tascam 388 tape machine. The process was fast and inspiring. I grabbed whatever instruments were within arms’ reach: a classical guitar, viola bass, my Roland Rhythm Ace drum machine, everything felt very off the cuff. Some new melodies surfaced, new arrangements, feels and harmonic structure. Kris ran everything through a spring reverb and a delay pedal and performed live effects as I played the songs in the room. I wasn’t on headphones, so I didn’t know what he was doing until playback – it was always vibey and cool.”

Field Guide, aka Dylan MacDonald, released a self-titled album in 2022 reflecting on life challenges and the processing of emotions.

While performing the songs of the self-titled album on the road in a solo capacity, MacDonald found the structures mutating into something collectively new, different and exciting. At the completion of the tour, he quickly fleshed out the reimagined, stripped-down, captured-in-the-wild feeling of those new arrangements and the result is Field Guide (Tape Redux).

“Over the past year or so, I’ve been touring in support of a bunch of rad artists all over Canada, the U.S., and in Europe,” MacDonald says. “I’ve been playing solo every night, which at first felt like more of a necessity than anything but over time has become something that I very much love. The songs have grown and taken on a new life, I wanted to capture them again in this moment.”

Right on the tail of the release of his sophomore LP via Birthday Cake Records, Field Guide (the musical moniker of Dylan MacDonald) is announcing a full headlining run of tour dates that criss-crosses North America beginning February 24, 2023. Full tour dates can be found below and tickets can be purchased HERE.

"After a month of solo touring in Europe it was a treat to get the band together to record a live version of ‘Worst of Ways’ and two new-album staples from my solo set ("For Sure" and "You Could Be Free") with BnB at No Fun Studios at home in Winnipeg,” says MacDonald. “I’m very excited to be hitting the road next year all over Canada and the US for my debut headline tour!"

MORE ABOUT FIELD GUIDE
Field Guide is a weaver of worlds. Built around his inviting voice and wrapped in warm textures, his self-titled sophomore full-length builds his most engaging world yet. The album lives in a place between darkness and hopefulness with unshakeable melodies at its heart. “Melody is what makes words fall out of my mouth,” MacDonald says. “It’s disarming. When I find a melody that represents my internal world, I drop my guard. I allow the words to appear out of thin air without judgement. A lot of these songs came to life that way. I wasn’t trying to make anything, but the songs became a home for words that I wasn’t yet ready to write on the page.”

The past few years haven’t allowed for much escape from our interior worlds. There’s been a lot to move through, and many things can be true at once. This album lives at the sometimes-tense intersection of those truths – loving someone dearly while being pulled toward something new, feeling joy in the melancholy, a gratitude for deep friendship and an uncertainty of one’s place in it.

The album is also alive with the people and places that surrounded its creation. Vocals and acoustic guitars were recorded near Riding Mountain National Park in a woodstove-heated cabin during one of Manitoba’s coldest winters in years. Bass and drums were tracked at Breakglass Studios in Montreal, a room that already felt familiar from falling in love with the records of tour-mate Leif Vollebekk. Final overdubbing took place at Monarch Studios in Vancouver surrounded by trusted engineers and friends. And constant inspiration was found in his circle of Winnipeg creators working away on their own projects. Like The Big Pink house – Boy Golden, Slow Spirit, Roman Clarke, Kris Ulrich, and others dropped in on each other to share demos and often lend their sounds to each other’s albums.

LISTEN / SHARE “YOU COULD BE FREE” HERE

Beyond his hometown, Field Guide has had the opportunity to meet some heroes and new friends. He’s supported Leif Vollebekk, Bahamas, SYML, Wild Rivers, JP Saxe, and Penny & Sparrow on their tours this year. He’s built a legion of fans online and on the road. So, while this is a solo album that invites the listener inside Field Guide’s inner monologue world, it really is meant to be lived in together. “These are the truest, rawest songs that I’ve ever written. I’ve never felt so sure about something I’ve made before. And now, it’s yours.”
