“Basement Revolver's new EP, Wax and Digital, is a wonderful playground of contradictions. It's a worthy and textured successor to their beautiful 2018 debut LP, Heavy Eyes.” - 9/10 Exclaim!

Today, Hamilton’s Basement Revolver release their new EP Wax and Digital via Sonic Unyon. In addition to the album, the indie rock act has shared a video for the second single, “Have I Been Deceived”.

Looking back at the religious upbringing that guitarist/vocalist Chrisy Hurn has – for the most part – since left behind, and gazing ahead at the person she hopes to become, “Have I Been Deceived” finds her further questioning ‘the shit I’ve held on to’ in a dreamy country-rock sway.

Speaking on the new track, Hurn says:

“Think about “Have I Been Deceived” as an open letter to God. This past year, I have been feeling like I was brainwashed. I was taught to think in a particular manner, taught to love in a specific way, taught to think about my body and sexuality in a specific (ahem oppressive) way, and quite honestly at the time, I ate that shit up. I was the girl in highschool trying to convert all my friends, telling everyone to stay abstinent, listening to every Christian band that sounded almost as good as the real thing. That was my entire identity. Throughout my twenties, this identity fell apart.

I’ve become increasingly uncomfortable with who I was, so much that being around any type of Christian culture, makes me feel nauseous, or worse.

I want to let that go, I want to think clearly about faith, but I am afraid that I am not able to. I am afraid that I was gaslighted into loving something that is wrong or an ugly version of something that could be good. I don’t know who I am without my past. I don’t know who I am moving forward. I wish I had a more clear answer but I don’t; I am just here.”

Recorded with Toronto-based producer Ian Gomes (Greys, Frigs, Odonis Odonis), Wax and Digital expands on the bedroom-y sound of the band’s previous releases while losing none of its intimacy. Guitars oscillate between soaring riffs and shimmering shoegaze ambience while the rhythm section propels like a well-oiled machine, and Hurn’s vocals ring out in crystal clarity. In the past, she has earned comparisons to The Cranberries’ late Dolores O'Riordan, but here she proves her depth with stunning performances in the style of Mitski, Alvvays’ Molly Rankin, or fellow Hamiltonian Ellis.

Hamilton’s Basement Revolver continue to set their sights on forward motion with the release of their upcoming six-song EP. Wax And Digital - slated for release October 18, 2019 via Sonic Unyon - evolves beyond the bedroomy sound of the band’s previous releases while losing none of its intimacy. Along with the EP announcement, the band has shared the title track.

“Wax and Digital” is the EP’s most vivid romantic statement. Singer Chrisy Hurn says of the song: “‘Wax and Digital’ is about me and my husband, the music that we love together, and how that music has shaped our relationship. In a broader sense it is about how culture informs our lives - even though culture changes rapidly and is temporary, we will always have certain things to hold on to, like music, to look back on and feel sentimental about. I hope that people take away a sense of nostalgia within their own lives, from the things that have helped them to fall in love, or that people think about the things that they have lost, but with thankfulness. Life is a crazy mess, but it’s beautiful and confusing and poetic, may we never forget the things that help us to make some sense of it.”

The upcoming EP follows a successful 2018 that saw the band released their acclaimed debut LP, Heavy Eyes, via Sonic Unyon and Memphis Industries affiliate label Fear Of Missing Out. They have now expanded to a 4-piece, with the founding trio of guitarist-vocalist Chrisy Hurn, bassist Nimal Agalawatte, and drummer Brandon Munro, adding second guitarist Jonathan Malström to further augment and intensify their emotionally charged dream-pop. With her mind on her upcoming marriage, Hurn wrote this collection of songs in a period of change. The EP looks back at her religious upbringing that she has - for the most part - since left behind, and gazes ahead at the person she hopes to become.

Having just wrapped up a successful run of Canadian tour dates, Hamilton outfit Basement Revolver are sharing their striking new video for "Baby" ahead of their October UK tour supporting Amber Arcades. "Baby" was one of the lead-singles from their recent album Heavy Eyes, which came out last month via Sonic Unyon - the track made Amazon UK’s Week One, and was added to Apple’s Nightcap playlist as well as Spotify’s Indie Highlights. Album cut “Dancing” has made its way up CBC Radio 3’s Top 30, while the LP has been in Earshot’s Top 5 for several weeks.

Weaving melancholia with fuzzy dreamy pop melodies and a heavy guitar undercurrent, lead-singer Chrisy Hurn shares intimate stories and personal wounds from her past, revealing a deeply affecting and rewarding insight. The video follows Chrisy on a journey and with visibly expressive and emotive delivery. She explains more about the song:

“I feel a lot of emotions, sometimes annoyingly so. ‘Baby’ is about feeling sad and down even though you are generally happy about everything and everyone in your life. It’s about feeling confused about what I want in life, and how that affects other people. It is about crying a lot and feeling like I was burdening my partner with those questions (even though he has always been completely sorry) and not wanting him to feel like he was the source of my anxiety. It is also about my tendency to retreat when things get too overwhelming, to spend all day and night in my bed and watching Netflix and eating Doritos.”

The trio of Chrisy Hurn (vocals, guitar), Nimal Agalawatte (bass, synth), and Brandon Munro (drums) hail from Hamilton and their ascent to the spotlight has been a steady trajectory. They were signed by Memphis Industries’ UK sub-label Fear Of Missing Out, who released their debut self-titled EP in 2016, which included breakout track “Johnny”, which is also a highlight of their debut full-length Heavy Eyes, which has garnered critical acclaim and support from CBC Radio 3, Campus/Community Radio across Canada, and BBC Radio 6Music.

Assured yet open, beguiling yet honest, heartfelt yet playful. In a relatively short time, Basement Revolver have successfully encapsulated the yearning and hopefulness of their generation, whilst harnessing a unique, yet familiar soundscape.
