Today, Andy Shauf presents a music video for “Halloween Store” — one of “the best two songs on [Norm]…grounded by acoustic guitar but [featuring] lush instrumental breaks and repeating hooks” (Variety) – and announces a 2024 solo tour. In an enlightening interview with Stereogum in which he shared the story behind every song on the album, Shauf revealed “Halloween Store” was one of the first written for Norm, mulled over and reworked from when he envisioned it as a disco record. “It’s definitely a Halloween story,” he said, “I was hoping to put it out around Halloween, but I missed deadlines.” Now, with Halloween just around the corner, Shauf shines a flashlight on the much-adored Norm standout and “the album’s peak” (Treble). The hand-drawn “Halloween Store” video is charming and timely, a perfect visual accompaniment for the fast-approaching holiday.

Next spring, Shauf will embark on a North American solo tour, bringing his beloved live set to a slew of intimate venues in major cities and smaller markets. A full list of dates are below, and tickets are on-sale this Friday at 10am ET.

Recently, Denmark’s Brodie Sessions released a special performance by Shauf and his band performing Norm’s title track, “Halloween Store” and “Sunset”. This was shot on 16mm and filmed at H.C. Ørsted Power Station in Copenhagen.

As hailed by Pitchfork, "[Shauf's] eighth album, Norm, is his most meticulous and beguiling, straying from his semi-autobiographical past work to span three perspectives and tactfully downplaying its philosophical quandaries with his lushest arrangements to date.” Shauf wrote, performed and recorded the album in its entirety and enlisted Neal Pogue (Outkast, Tyler, The Creator) to mix. Pogue took the music’s sonic framework in a new direction, one with a greater sense of clarity and lots of space. Listen closely, and deep in the music, a shift happens as the world goes sideways. The tempo slows, vertigo slips in, or a discordant note appears. An uneasy clarinet phrase devolves into a busy signal. A lyric veers from a bird’s-eye-view to intimate thoughts. The result is a recognizable Shauf production, but with a flowing landscape of suppressed grooves propelling the songs toward uncertain destinations. He’s driving us out to a wild and dangerous place.

PRAISE FOR ANDY SHAUF AND NORM

"Norm is a gorgeously produced collection of short folk-fiction. When given closer attention, the album unfurls into an anthology of dark, interconnected tales of loss, unrequited love and casual brushes with the divine." — Variety

"Shauf has a knack for those sorts of observational details, and he approaches writing lyrics a bit like writing fiction." — Vanity Fair

"Andy Shauf is a master at capturing the tragedy in the minutiae of human interactions." — The FADER

"Even at their most obscure, Shauf’s songs are as alive and full of mystery as the stranger beside you at checkout." — Pitchfork

“It's an album that further solidifies his position as a genre-leading storyteller” - Exclaim!

“A dreamlike serenity is undercut with unsettling desperation in ‘Catch Your Eye’” - New York Times

"[Andy Shauf is] just such a phenomenal storyteller." — NPR Music

“The certified crooner sharpens his pen for another beautiful narrative-based offering” -
RANGE Mag

"Rather than connecting the dots of its characters’ lore, Norm questions the format of the concept album in the first place, presenting pieces of evidence and asking the listener to find the story and draw their own conclusions" — Paste

"Like any good story, Norm rewards multiple listens. Its most indelible moments are enriched with Shauf’s curious details: The Price Is Right soundtracking a divinely hallucinogenic vision, a movie theater as a haven for peeping, and a climactic trip to a Halloween store." — MTV News

. “...each song like a new episode of a TV miniseries thought up by a more subtle Hitchcock, a less gothy Burton, a more disturbed Wes Anderson” - Northern Transmissions

"With his delicate touch and keen eye for detail, Shauf weaves together a rich tapestry of sounds and lyrics to create an atmosphere that is at once dreamy and introspective.” — Glide

Andy Shauf returns with “Telephone”, his new single/video off his forthcoming album, Norm, out February 10 on Arts & Crafts. With Norm, Shauf upended his songwriting methods, creating a deeply haunting and unpredictable universe. “Telephone” follows the “jaunty” and “existential” (Stereogum) lead single “Wasted On You” and “Catch Your Eye”, in which “a dreamlike serenity is undercut with unsettling desperation” (New York Times). Shauf hates talking on the phone, so, imagining someone different, he wrote “Telephone”. The yearning intensity of the song went unusual places, and Shauf deemed it worth keeping. ‘I wish you’d call me on the telephone,’ he begins in a half-whisper, ‘I want to hear your voice // reaching late into the night.’

The accompanying video, animated by Chad VanGaalen, features a returning character from Shauf’s “Catch Your Eye” video, and offers a fantastical continuation of its predecessor’s plot. "I love Chad’s animation style so much,” Shauf says of the video. “He takes normal things and makes them odd, but also makes odd things seem totally normal. We asked him to take us into the weird world of Norm and a few months later we received an email with a link to this video and it was everything that we hoped for and much more." There’s a story unfolding on Norm, leaping from song to song and video to video, illuminating the comedy and cruelty of humanity. Most of the action takes place in the gaps between tracks, but Shauf deliberately left open spaces through which audiences could enter to find the story and create meaning for themselves.

Norm’s story takes shape through little epiphanies, accumulating like debris from a series of implosions. Its cast of characters includes four voices in all. Three are narrators, inside whose perspective Shauf submerges us for one or more songs. Alongside story editor Nicholas Olson, Shauf refined Norm’s narrative until he felt the bones of the story as he imagined it lay close enough to the surface to be dug up by anyone who wanted to go looking. With Shauf singing everything, it’s not always obvious at first whose point of view is represented in each song. But the lyric sheet provides discreet clues to know whose voice we’re hearing at any given moment. Only through repeated listening does the story fully reveal itself.

Andy Shauf is driving us out to a wild and dangerous place. Norm, his new album out February 10 on Arts & Crafts, is a recognizable Shauf production, but with a flowing landscape of suppressed grooves propelling the songs toward uncertain destinations. The story takes shape through little epiphanies, accumulating like debris from a series of implosions, beginning with last month’s “jaunty [and] existential” (Stereogum) lead single/album opener, “Wasted On You”. Today, Shauf returns with the new single, “Catch Your Eye”. Accompanied by a charming animated video written by Shauf and featuring artwork by Mary Vertulfo, “Catch Your Eye” continues along Norm’s tracklist, and depicts a missed connection in a grocery store. ‘I need to meet you / I need to catch your eye,’ Shauf confesses through layers of vocals and muted guitar, before bright synth tones usher the tune along.

Beginning next month, Shauf will bring his acclaimed live performance to a slew of cities across North America, Europe and the UK in support of Norm, with Katy Kirby and Marina Allen supporting select dates. A full tour schedule is listed below, and tickets are on sale now.

MORE ABOUT NORM
What would eventually become Norm started out in a very different place. Shauf really wanted to steer clear of a concept album, instead aiming to make a normal record. It would be a set of unrelated songs, like albums recorded by other artists, and he would call it Norm. Watching a David Lynch film one night, Shauf found inspiration for how to frame his concept. What appeared to be a nearly static camera shot of a key on a table continued uninterrupted for two minutes, then five minutes, then seven. It seemed impossible in its relentlessness, bordering on genius. Eventually, Shauf realized his browser had crashed and the movie had frozen. Enchanted by the sense of possibility and wonder that had made the film so vivid to him during that period of incomprehension, he wanted to create something similar. He deliberately left open spaces through which readers could enter to find the story and create meaning for themselves.

Once initial sketches emerged and Shauf realized he did, in fact, have the makings of another concept album, he began revising freestanding songs he’d written for the original idea of Norm, altering the lyrics until they had all been reengineered to belong in Norm’s universe. He wanted to connect them without force-marching listeners through an obvious story. Refining the lyrics, he sent them to his friend Nicholas Olson, who interpreted the overall narrative as he understood it. They repeated this process a few times, until Shauf felt the bones of the story as he imagined it lay close enough to the surface to be dug up by anyone who wanted to go looking.

Shauf wrote, performed and recorded the entire album, and recruited Neal Pogue (Tyler the Creator, Janelle Monae, Outkast) to mix. With Shauf singing everything, it’s not always obvious at first whose point of view is represented in each song. But the lyric sheet provides discreet clues to know whose voice we’re hearing at any given moment (Norm’s cast of characters includes four voices in all).

With Norm, Shauf has upended his songwriting methods, creating a deeply haunting and unpredictable universe. He’s tackling love and loss on a more panoramic, extreme scale, but Shauf feels the album is consistent with his earlier focus on small, intense encounters. He uses these close-ups to devastating effect, keeping us focused on the tiny connections between lonely creatures, while raising the stakes on the action to existential levels. There’s a story unfolding that leaps song to song, illuminating the comedy and cruelty of humanity, but, if you listen closely, most of the action takes place in the gaps between tracks.
