Next week, Oh Susanna (Suzie Ungerleider) is set to release her latest record, A Girl In Teen City, and today she is treating listeners to stream of the whole album courtesy of CBC Music. To accompany the album stream, CBC Music has a track by track ‘story behind the song’ write up from Ungerleider.

STREAM A GIRL IN TEEN CITY VIA CBC MUSIC

Due out May 26 via Stella Records, on A Girl In Teen City, Oh Susanna discovers what it means to be undone by love, the exuberant freedom under the cover of night, and music bursting with riotous rebellion. “Trying to find out who she is while trying to be something she isn’t,” says Ungerleider. “Falling in love, getting drunk, having her heart broken, hanging out with friends in bedrooms, basements and parking lots, sneaking into shows in burnt out warehouses, watching the waves, walking home over bridges and railroad tracks in all that endless rain.” Like a coming of age novel, A Girl In Teen City, is both piercingly specific and exhilaratingly familiar. No matter where you grew up, or where you live, the songs will bring you home.

A Girl In Teen City reunites Ungerleider with producer Jim Bryson. The pair collaborated on her previous release Namedropper, an album featuring the songs of Canada’s top songwriters written specifically for Oh Susanna to interpret. This time, with the urging by her friend and co-conspirator, Bryson, she embarked on a time machine to visit her teenage self in a sleepy port town that she thought no one had ever heard of.

From cheeky rock pop to quietly beautiful love songs, A Girl In Teen City reflects Oh Susanna’s songwriting breadth. Her brilliant vocals float through the sensuous instrumentation to create a cinematic soundscape. The album finds Ungerleider working with longtime friends and musicians Eli Abrams on bass, Cam Giroux on drums, Gord Tough on guitar, and Jim Bryson on guitar and keyboards. Guest harmony vocalists include Holly McNarland, Gabrielle Giguere, Ungerleider’s sister Jessie and niece Sofia.

The JUNO Award nominated and Genie Award winning Canadian songstress began performing as Oh Susanna in the mid-1990s, crafting a persona that matched the timeless qualities of her music, sounds that drew from the deep well of early 20th Century folk, country and blues, yet rooted in her finely-honed storytelling skills.

Today, Vancouver power-trash trio Needles//Pins are sharing another song from their upcoming LP, Good Night, Tomorrow, courtesy of Exclaim!. “All The Same”, like a lot of the songs on Good Night, Tomorrow, “thematically draws on my insomnia,” says Guitarist/Vocalist Adam Solomonian. “Here it's the exhaustion of restlessness and potential promise of rootlessness as a solution. Like most things, the inevitable is inescapable. Despite our best efforts of escape, it's all the same.”

For their third LP, Good Night, Tomorrow, Needles // Pins have teamed up with Mint Records and Portland’s Dirt Cult Records. Recorded with Jesse Gander (Japandroids, White Lung) in Vancouver at Rain City Recorders, the album shows an organic growth from the power pop of their previous two albums. Guitarist/Vocalist Adam Solomonian’s voice is gruffer from playing hundreds of shows, and you can see a richer appreciation of the group’s influences such as Jawbreaker and The Replacements at play in the song writing. Tony Dubroy’s solid bass lines and Macey Budgell’s heavy drumming combine to form a powerful rhythm section that perfectly complement Solomonian’s simplistic-but-pointed guitar playing.

The record is a progression both musically and lyrically from their older material while still maintaining the hook-centric philosophy of their previous releases. Needles//Pins have become legendary in Vancouver for wild shows and gruff, catchy punk rock melodies. They draw from classic punk roots like the wiry pop of The Buzzcocks and the gravely anthems of Stiff Little Fingers, but have a unique West Coast approach that would align them with the catchiest of the Lookout! or Dirtnap Records catalog. Though none of the band’s songs overstay their welcome, you’ll find yourself humming one of their hooks days after seeing them play.

Needles//Pins will continue on tour this summer to support Good Night, Tomorrow including a stop at Sled Island. More North American tour dates to be announced soon. Pre-orders of Good Night, Tomorrow will receive a limited edition grey sky marble vinyl of the LP.

Andy Shauf has delivered a delightfully surreal new video for his song “Early To The Party”. The track is from Shauf’s critically heralded album The Party, which Stereogum called “a lovely, luxuriant thing” and the Independent described as “a baroque-pop exercise with echoes of Seventies smarties like Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman and Steely Dan.”

The new clip, directed by Luke McCutcheon & Michael Yablonski (Andrew Bird, Young Galaxy), depicts an offbeat and surreal party attended by an collection of eccentric Twin Peaks-like characters. They socialize with one another, dance alone, and eventually engage in a strange party game which ends on a both poignant and unnerving note.
