Singer/songwriter, film composer and pianist Patrick Watson, and singer/songwriter Charlotte Cardin, have released a new collaborative song today, “Gordon in the Willows”. Haunting in its beauty and simplicity, the song unfurls over lightly arpeggiating piano and Cardin’s breathtaking voice covering a range of multiple octaves, until it disintegrates with a pulse rattling bass and echoing drums.
Watson, Polaris Music Prize recipient and Cardin, JUNO Award winner - wrote the lyrics together, and recorded the song last fall at Lost River Studios, in a rural lake village in Quebec, outside of Montreal where Watson has previously hosted his own music festival.

Last night, Watson and Cardin pulled off a winter gift performance that was broadcast on Patrick Watson socials channels and live from ICI Musique, to get through the cold Canadian winter. Under the cover of darkness, they delivered a mesmerizing performance from the top of Montreal’s cold Mont-Royal. Mysterious spotlights cut through the night sky, drawing curious eyes to the mountain as fans around the city tried to figure out the secret location from their windows. Watch a short clip later today HERE.
Watson and Cardin have collaborated in the past, co-writing “Next To You” featured on Cardin’s 2023 album. They shared a live version on Instagram that has over 4 million views, and Watson is also working with Cardin on her new album.
"A few months ago, Patrick played me a piano piece—just the music, no words—and the moment I heard it, it felt like the whisper of an old friend.” – Charlotte Cardin
“Charlotte and I had this magical music moment together. I wanted a song that felt like it came from a long time ago” – Patrick Watson
Last November, Watson shared “Silencio,” featuring rising French singer-songwriter November Ultra. It was the first preview of a forthcoming project inspired by Watson losing his voice, and not being able to sing or talk, for nearly three months. “Silencio” explored the impressions that came to him during that time, and led Patrick to this new creative endeavor in which he would invite different artists to sing on new songs, inspired by this period of silence. More information on the project, which will include “Gordon In The Willows” as well, will be announced soon.
Watson’s most recent full-length album is 2022’s Better in the Shade, which draws on literary inspirations and released after his decade-old single “Je te laisserai des mots” went viral on social media (the song has gone Platinum in several territories and has crossed 1 billion streams). Watson’s recent collaborators include Georgio and Hania Rani, and last year released “Perfect Day (Piano Komorebi Version)”, which he recorded for Wim Wenders’ Oscar-nominated film Perfect Days.
