Shane Ghostkeeper is most recognized for his songwriting, singing and guitar playing in the band Ghostkeeper. Shane spent his childhood and adolescence years isolated by Northern Alberta's geography (High Level, Rocky Lane, and Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement), listening to country music records and developing an admiration for individuals who had the ability to convey rich stories through song. Later he expanded his musical horizons beyond these roots, he found another world in the self-aware genres of art rock and experimental folk. Here, he developed his own storytelling language with which he could voice the traditional songwriting he grew up with. And now he comes full circle with years of education and experimentation to make his first Country music-inspired record. This exploration of Country music is a dedication and tribute to his family and the stories they share.
Today, he reveals his debut single, “Hunger Strike”, which arrives with a video from director Guillaume Carlier. On the track, Ghostkeeper says, “If a human being can be gauged by the weight of their love, then my Grandpa was a gravitational anomaly on the verge of supernova.”
“A few years after my Grandma passed away, he surrendered to his inconsolable heartbreak and loneliness and declared a hunger strike. With his family by his side and his immense romance, he took his last breath, in peace, on their 68th wedding anniversary. Hiy Hiy”

The accompanying video is “inspired by Shane's grandfather, Roland, who actually did go on a hunger strike when his wife Olive passed away,” says Carlier. “They were all about two-stepping and having a good time. Despite the sad subject, it's an upbeat song that is designed to be played in any country bar. We shot this in a beautiful fall afternoon off Highway 22, in what I believe is the most beautiful part of Alberta.”
