Following past singles, “Every Time”, and “The Dam”, Nick Ferrio is sharing “Television Of Roses”, the title track from his upcoming album, out June 18, 2021. “Television Of Roses” is the light that flickers before your eyes, and convinces you otherwises. “This song and this album are about making the personal political and how it kind of takes a personal awakening to realize that,” says Ferrio. “And I think part of that 'awakening' is realizing you’re being duped, knowing that you should know better, but for so long you have been convinced otherwise. It starts by asking the manipulator, how do you keep coming up with new ways of manipulating, and continues exploring ideas about persuasion, the cult of personality and how easily people can be charmed. I think I wrote this during the last Ontario provincial election, kind of as a way of thinking through populism in politics, the long-con, and how easily the public can be tricked by someone like Doug Ford. We can now see how poorly he's served Ontario through this pandemic, and really is anyone surprised that Doug Ford, the brother of Rob Ford would have a difficult time leading Ontario through a pandemic? I didn't think so.”

MORE ON TELEVISION OF ROSES

Produced by Jonas Bonnetta (Evening Hymns) the album sees contributions from Caylie Runciman (Boyhood), Evangeline Gentle, Lewis Parker (For Esmé), Nathan Truax (Said the Whale), and Tanner Paré (Heaps).

With Television of Roses, Ferrio arrives upon his decade-long commitment of solo creations with this collection of tactile memories, conversations and wisdoms. He has packaged a document for his son and the state of mind that fatherhood introduced, “Being a parent has made my focus more intense. Thinking of life through the metaphor of a camera, the aperture has been adjusted and what is important is now much more clear. Music and family are the subject and everything else is just noise in the background.”

Recorded by Jonas Bonnetta of Evening Hymns at his rural Port William Sound studio, the 15-year friendship between them and deep-rooted Tom Petty appreciation returned into depth of song: “Jonas has this adept ability to make me and my band feel comfortable. He’s able to conjure and capture magic. We spent nights together in a cabin, working out arrangements for the next day’s session huddled around the woodstove and listening to Full Moon Fever on repeat.”

In that blanket of north Frontenac county, Ferrio and Bonnetta gathered their gang of friends to collaborate: Caylie Runciman (Boyhood), Evangeline Gentle, Lewis Parker (For Esmé), Nathan Truax (Said the Whale) and Tanner Paré (Heaps/The Kents). The swelling results were mixed by Gavin Gardiner (The Wooden Sky) and mastered by Philip Shaw Bova.

Ferrio’s appetite to search beyond the song is found throughout the breadcrumbs of his work: July Talk and Indigenous high-school students at Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School in Thunder Bay; his involvement in the New Constellations Tour alongside Polaris Music Prize nominees Lido Pimienta, Elisapie, Feist, and Jeremy Dutcher; recordings with Julie Doiron and world-wide performances with Ansley Simpson, The Burning Hell, and Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, amongst others.

“Writing songs is a large part of my identity now. At this time in my life, it feels like music is a part of what is necessary for me to be a person. I do it daily. It’s like tapping into something spiritual for me. It’s my sanctuary.”
