Today, Aasiva shares her brand new single, “Namu”, a song that sets the stage for exciting new music from this Inuk Indie-Pop artist originally from Panniqtuuq, Nunavut.
This is Aasiva's first release since her self-titled debut album in 2018, which was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Folk Album at the 2019 Indigenous Music Awards, showcased at Breakout West in the Yukon, and reached over 200,000 streams on Spotify. That same year, Aasiva performed and led youth workshops across the North and toured internationally to the Migration Music Festival in Taipei, Taiwan.

Produced by Jace Lasek (Wolf Parade, The Jerry Cans, Stars), “Namu” shimmers with an electro sound that incorporates lo-fi guitars, beatboxing courtesy of FxckMr, and a nod to ‘90’s production. “I wrote this song while I was in Nunavik for a festival,” says Aasiva. “This was at the very beginning of my independent artist career and I had many shows lined up. I was very excited to be an artist full time, and I just kept wondering, where will my music take me?
Also, I feel like this is a question that we often ask ourselves: ‘Where are we going? What are we going to do next?’ That was my inspiration for this song.”
It's an apt line of questioning for an artist that holds a lot of promise. With this new song brimming from the experience of her upbringing, Aasiva adds her voice to a growing chorus of young artists proudly bringing Inuktitut music into a broader audience of music lovers everywhere.
Be on the lookout for more music from Aasiva in the near future.
