For the tenth episode of Killbeat’s collaboration with Laurie Brown’s Pondercast, titled PonderBeat, Laurie begins with two tracks that tackle the expanse, both upwards and down. Absolutely Free’s “How To Paint Clouds” takes us into the beyond with that big sky feeling while Astral Swans’ “Spiral” notes that at the bottom of a spiral, there’s just more spiral - no easy way out.
Laurie has also selected two story telling songwriters who she feels can both “nail a moment or a feeling...usually one we’d rather stay silent about”. Andy Shauf’s “Jaywalker” and Charlotte Cornfield’s “Drunk For You” both tackle our warm, fuzzy, confusing, and sometimes hurtful inner dialog during those moments.
Both Jasper Sloan Yip’s “Strange Calm” and Homeshakes “Passenger Seat” float happily between a place of uncertainty and knowing - a place where you might be just along for the ride, somehow trapped and liberated at the same time.
In Charles Spearin’s “My City Of Starlings” we are taken along on a walk through the city in two movements, one at sidewalk level and the other on another plane, while KDAP’s (Kevin Drew A Picture) “Wilner’s Parade” was written while walking in the countryside, with the spirits for company.
Closing out this episode, Ouri’s “Ossature” explores that ‘feeling in our bones’ and Cots’ “Last Sip” creates another world apart, one that’s right beside your ear, inviting you in.
