Scattered Clouds announces its new record TAKE AWAY YOUR SUMMER, a futuristic broken romance set amidst a burning dystopian landscape. Inspired by the dichotomous terrain of their hometown of Hull, Québec, the experimental outfit of Philippe Charbonneau and Jamie Kronick explores themes of political conspiracy, post-capitalism, police brutality and nihilism on their second full-length, set against a romantic backdrop of auto-fictional narratives told in both English and French prose. With a sonic palette that calls to mind late 70s / early 80s soundtracks like Vangelis’ Blade Runner, John Carpenter’s Escape From New York, Brad Fiedel’s The Terminator, and Tangerine Dream’s The Sorcerer, TAKE AWAY YOUR SUMMER walks the razor thin line between cacophony and delight, balancing the uneasy ecstasy of Suicide and the thundering underbelly or Liars.
Today the band shares the album’s first single and video, “Don’t Question Me” – its brooding but restrained rhythm, oddly melodic synth threads, and distant echoic vocals setting the stage for the album’s terse retro-synthetic soundscapes. Lyrics about police interrogation and not answering to authority are articulated in a found footage collage video directed and edited by Michael John Dubue – who also contributes musically to all nine songs of the album – repurposing scenes from 1971 drug awareness film The 16 Floor to create the song’s unsettling neo-noir universe.

“‘Don’t Question Me’ is about breaking duality and embracing singularity,” says frontman Charbonneau. “With themes that focus on the micro-personal version of macro-collective experience, the song is about running when the voices in your head telling you to stay where you are and obey orders. The video is a familiar thriller arc inspired by Scorsese’s Taxi Driver and Travis Bickle’s descent into madness.”
TAKE AWAY YOUR SUMMER was written and performed by Philippe Charbonneau, Michael John Dubue, and Jamie Kronick in Hull, Québec, with Grammy-nominated Ottawa engineer/mixer Philip Shaw Bova. Featuring artwork based on a photo of a quietly burning dépanneur seen by Charbonneau one summer night, the album imagery captures the ominous yet seductive confines of the band’s all-too-vivid anti-utopia. The album will be released on vinyl and digital formats by Boiled Records, the Toronto & Philadelphia-based experimental record that released fellow Hull band FET.NAT’s acclaimed Le Mal LP earlier this year.
