PRAISE FOR OH SUSANNA & JOHNSTOWN
“Oh Susanna’s passionate vocals and evocative, backward-glancing songs make her one of new music’s brightest lights.” - Maclean’s
“Brilliant debut album” - UNCUT Magazine (UK)
“Ungerleider is a natural story-teller with a bewitching voice.” - The Times (UK)
“Johnstown was an album that came through the post, and I immediately loved it. Her voice has a heart-tugging emotive quality.” - Bob Harris in Billboard Magazine
“Oh Susanna demonstrates her deep understanding of traditional folk music conventions by creating a memorable cast of characters badly bruised and battered as they travel down a lonesome highway.” - Country Music People Magazine (UK)
“’Johnstown’ is quite frankly, like no other released in 2000. Produced by Peter Moore who worked with The Cowboy Junkies on their ‘The Trinity Sessions’ album, the echoes of old Appalachian ballads and songs dealing with personal loss and helplessness was, although dark and bleak, never less than fascinating.” - Pennyblack Music (UK)
On Record Store Day, Oh Susanna (Suzie Ungerleider) celebrated the 20th anniversary of her critically acclaimed, debut full-length album Johnstown with a re-mastered vinyl release. Originally released in 1999, Johnstown is considered a contemporary folk-noir masterpiece brimming with ghostly songs of melancholic beauty and menace. Oh Susanna’s voice evokes a cinematic narration to simultaneously warm the heart and chill the blood.
Today, Oh Susanna announces the 20th Anniversary Show on June 7 at Longboat Hall at The Great Hall in Toronto, where she’ll be joined by special guest Mo Kenney. The show is being promoted by Collective Concerts and is a NXNE partnered event. Tickets are on sale April 26 at 10am ET here.

Johnstown was produced and recorded by Grammy Award winner Peter J. Moore (Cowboy Junkies, The Band, The Clash) at his studio on Beaconsfield Street in Toronto. The vinyl re-issue of Johnstown is remastered by Moore from the original recorded tracks and includes a limited-edition poster of Johnstown’s illustrated lyrics by the comic artist Hank Pine. Also included is a digital download of A Shot of Oh Susanna, a five-song cassette recorded in 1998 which was previously only available at live shows. These acoustic versions of songs later received full production on Johnstown.
This first pressing of Johnstown will be limited to 500 hand-numbered copies and will only be available through independent retailers for Record Store Day. The digitally remastered album will be available to stream on all platforms on June 14.

MORE ABOUT MO KENNEY
Throughout Mo Kenney’s rough ride, from troubled teenagerdom to battling with her demons on 2017’s eclectic and brash The Details, music has remained constant. This album garnered Kenney a JUNO nomination and an ECMA Award (Solo Recording of the Year), in addition to her many ECMA and Nova Scotia Music Awards and nominations. At 17, she stunned Maritime rock ‘n’ roll legend Joel Plaskett with a couple of songs recorded at her friend’s high school, eventually leading to a long-running collaborative relationship between the two. In 2012, she released her self-titled debut, a powerful first impression that melds her extraordinary knack for nuance and a clear bent toward sounds more incendiary and ambitious. She expands that vibe on In My Dreams, venting existential frustration, dabbling in spacey prog rock, and stylishly sowing sorrow on the title track.
