Dilly Dally have shared a new track off their upcoming LP, Heaven, out September 14 via Dine Alone. “Sober Motel” is a searing battle cry for sobriety. Singer/guitarist Katie Monks explains:
“‘Sober Motel’ is a celebration of sobriety, in the midst of an industry that is anything but. I wrote it in a motel bathroom after taking a mystical shower alone. There was something really pure about it all. The song spawned from a sadness I had for my friend Tony (Dilly’s bass player) who was struggling with addiction. We all were realizing that being on the road had turned into volatile place for some of us, and it was heartbreaking. In a larger sense, alcohol is so romanticized within our culture. Knowing that it can send so many people into a downward spiral, I wanted to step forward and do the opposite of that, and present people with a different image. All of this in the hopes that it would create a sort of protective layer around the band each night on stage (and anyone else who feels the same).”

Heaven rose from the ashes after Dilly Dally almost decided to call it quits following the rigorous cycle around their acclaimed debut, Sore. Instead, they’ve returned with a fierce, fiery ode to optimism, a distortion-soaked creed for hope and beauty in a world of darkness and doubt. Last month the band shared opening track “I Feel Free”, which was met by major profiles in Noisey ("true angelic punk"), Fader ("their songs vibrate with a powerful feminine energy, their live shows pack a gut-kicking wallop") and more.
Monks describes the sound of Heaven as “doom metal vibes with lots of positive messages.” Recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck), she’s backed by Liz Ball (lead guitar), Benjamin Reinhartz (drums), and Jimmy Tony (bass). Collectively they weave from anthemic slate cleaner (“I Feel Free”) to swamp-rock ferocity (“Doom”) to epic queer tragedy (“Bad Biology”) and beyond, while Monks’ singular wail remains one of the most powerful instruments in all of rock music.
This fall the band will tour with FIDLAR, full itinerary below.
