Today, Montreal artist Geoffroy is sharing the second single from his upcoming LP, Good Boy. "Hotel Bed" is a romantic, colourful, and celebratory song that highlights the international sounds featured throughout his fourth full-length record.

Once again, the perpetual saga of relationships unfolds," Geoffroy explains. "'Hotel Bed' follows the story of a girl who, tired of her new partner's indecision and conflicting messages, reaches her breaking point."

"I began crafting it on the piano at my cottage and through numerous studio sessions, it gradually transformed into what you hear today," he adds. "The music video features ‘Remesha Drums’, a group of drummers originally from Burundi. The drums they play on are called “Ingoma” and are made out of a specific type of wood that can only be found there."

MORE ABOUT GEOFFROY + GOOD BOY
Geoffroy is an essential and emerging voice in Canadian music. Now three LPs into a career that has solidified him as one of Quebec’s best artists, the Montreal-born songwriter and producer takes the next step internationally with the release of fourth full-length Good Boy.

Almost 10 years removed from his first release, this project was sparked with the intention of creating Geoffroy’s most authentic work to date, blending organic instrumentation and electronic elements into a bright and rich album filled with diverse sounds, a collection of songs that moves beyond the brooding depth that has defined recent works.

Each past album that Geoffroy has released reflected a different tone and period in the artist’s life and his evolution and experimentation with different sonic palettes. In this case, Good Boy sees Geoffroy look back and collaborate with longtime production partners Clément Leduc and Gabriel Gagnon, but also incorporate a diverse collection of new background musicians and singers that brings the album to life in vibrant colour.

That diversity was driven by a gradual shift in Geoffroy’s influences, having spent recent years immersing himself in the worlds of cumbiamusic and a range of other latin and african rhythmic styles, that melded with his traditional singer-songwriter form to create something that feels truly international.

In fact the record’s narrative was inspired by a trip to Mexico where he befriended - and ultimately adopted - a shelter dog named Papi, bringing him from the streets of Mexico City to Montreal. Papi serves as the mascot for the LP, but more importantly acts as an overarching metaphor for being lost, but ultimately found.

Asked to reflect on the change in perspective that accompanied the transition from his previous musical era into this one, Geoffroy spoke to the clarity he experienced in terms of his own agenda in the creation of music.

Live Slow Die Wise had a slower pace and I was eager to step away from the nostalgia and melancholy I had visited and analyzed plenty in the past,” Geoffroy reflects. “I did what felt natural, a feel-good album (I think) that shed the weight of the other ones. I feel I’m getting closer to the sound I’m looking for, though I might be chasing something that’s faster than me.”

Geoffroy is an essential and emerging voice in Canadian music. Now three LPs into a career that has solidified him as one of Quebec’s best artists, the Montreal-born songwriter and producer takes the next step internationally with the release of fourth full-length Good Boy, out June 14, 2024.

Today, he shares the first single from the album, “C.A.Y.A.”. “This one was a real challenge to crack,” says Geoffroy. “I spent over a year messing around with the instrumental, trying to come up with the perfect topline. Had some awesome ideas, but none of them felt quite right. Still, I couldn't give up on this track. There was something special about the music, and I was determined to figure it out. Then, just before our last recording session, it finally clicked: the chorus came to me out of the blue, and everything else just fell into place. This song is all about being real and true to yourself, no matter what. It's about sticking to who you are, even when the world tries to push you to change.”

The official music video for "C.A.Y.A." follows Geoffroy on a recent trip to Thailand where he played the single first for people he encountered. The video, directed by longtime friend and collaborator Kyle Smith, expands on Geoffroy's tradition of vibrant travel videos but adds a colourful, comedic tone that matches that of the new music.

Today, Geoffroy’s (pronounced : Jeff-wah) new self-released third LP officially hits the record store shelves, air waves, and playlists. Live Slow Die Wise was marked as one of the albums to watch for 2022 by ET Canada, Le Canal Auditif, and Exclaim!.

Recently, Geoffroy spent some time in Mexico and recorded a performance of “Sweetpie” from an Airbnb in San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas. “I liked how cozy the place was and it would allow us to record in a controlled environment, or a least we hoped so,” says Geoffroy. “Yet we still had to start it over a couple times before being able to tape the whole song without dogs barking in the background. Hence the ‘dog still at it?’ I say when entering the house.

It's the second song out of 7 total we recorded. At that point we had been traveling for almost a week and had a bunch of setbacks making me reconsider the feasibility of our two man operation. But getting this song down in a controlled environment motivated us to continue and to not give up on our ambitious project. The next morning we taped ‘As My Old Man Always Said’ at a hotel across the street and ‘Cold World’ on the steps leading to la Iglesia de San Cristóbalito.”

All of the live performances will be included in a short film, ‘Live Slow Die Wise in Mexico’, releasing February 22 on Geoffroy’s YouTube channel and on IGTV.

MORE ABOUT LIVE SLOW DIE WISE

The journey to the LP’s 2022 release began with the unveiling of “Cold World”, an intimate and reflective song that beautifully represents the album’s tone. “Live Slow Die Wise is the timeless story of societal individualism and ego,” Geoffroy shares. “We’re driven by an endless pursuit for growth, innovation and profit. But at what cost?” Live Slow Die Wise still features the personal and reflective touch Geoffroy fans know to expect, but this time through the lens tinted by experience. Inspired by artists like Ry Cooder, Paul Simon, Nick Drake, Jeff Buckley, and thinkers such as Alan Watts, Eckhart Tolle, and Ralph Waldo Emerson, Geoffroy brought a more contemplative and philosophical approach to the album’s songwriting than in previous works.

Live Slow Die Wise was penned during isolation in 2020, and brought to life in the studio with help from legendary French Canadian producer Louis-Jean Cormier. The songs mark a return to Geoffroy’s early days as an artist, travelling the world and playing solo on the streets as he went. A renewed appreciation for organic instrumentation and a recording process that favoured live takes in the studio added depth and authenticity to the songs and hopefully, forge a deep and intimate connection with the listener.

Live Slow Die Wise represents a specific state of mind. It's about taking the time to live freely and consciously. It's about being aware and embracing the ephemerality and fragility of life.”
