Singer, songwriter and producer Cold Specks (aka Al Spx) will release her fourth studio album, Light for the Midnight, on limited edition vinyl, CD and digitally on April 9 via Secret City Records in Canada and Mute in the rest of the world.

Light for the Midnight is a 10-track collection of fervent ballads and atmospheric songs, with Spx’s soulful voice channelled into expansive sonic worlds. At its core, it is a raw and deeply emotional personal reflection on endurance, survival, and transformation.

The new album launches today with “Lingering Ghosts”, which was co-written with British songwriter Ben Christophers (Françoise Hardy, Imogen Heap), and features Adrian Utley (Portishead) on guitar and production, Ali Chant (Perfume Genius / Katy J Pearson) on bass and production, Seb Rochford (Patti Smith / Adele) on drums and Dan Moore on piano.

MORE ABOUT LIGHT FOR THE MIDNIGHT
Light for the Midnight was conceived during a challenging period in Spx’s life, with work beginning amidst struggles with her mental health, experiences that are deeply embedded in the music. Spx emphasises its universality, despite its personal origins: "I definitely wanted to reflect on the last couple of years because it impacted me so much, but I also wanted the audience to walk away with this album. You know, the songs belong to them once I release them.”

The record was crafted in Toronto and Bristol, with Spx co-producing alongside Adrian Utley and Ali Chant. The album features string arrangements by Owen Pallett (Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Sampha) and additional contributions from Graham Walsh of Holy Fuck. Spx also worked with a stellar line up of collaborators, including Chantal Kreviazuk (Drake, Kendrick Lamar) who co-wrote Wandering in the Wild” and How it Feels (the latter described by The Guardian as “… a bruised but unbowed piano ballad”), Malcolm Middleton of Arab Strap, Ben Christophers (who co-wrote “Lingering Ghosts”), Terry Edwards, Ed Harcourt, and Jonathan Quarmby.

Since she arrived on our screens with an unforgettable a capella performance on Later… with Jools Holland in 2011, Cold Specks has delivered crackling, pared-down guitar blues, gothic soul, gospel and warm electronics across three albums which won Polaris Music Prize and JUNO Award nominations: 2012’s I Predict A Graceful Expulsion, 2014’s Neuroplasticity and 2017’s Fool’s Paradise. Her musical stretch is vast, she has worked with Swans, Massive Attack, and Moby and performed at Joni Mitchell’s birthday concert. This first album in seven years showcases her vast talent as a vocalist, songwriter, lyricist and producer to startling effect.

Georgia Harmer returns with her first new song since her 2022 debut album Stay In Touch. “Can We Be Still” spotlights the Toronto singer-songwriter's eloquent storytelling with expressive grace. A dedication to friendship, Georgia’s indelible voice envelopes the softly-strummed song with urgency and poise, singing “Now do you understand / I don’t have another plan / Now is the time to say / What it is you’ve been dreaming of saying.”

“‘Can We Be Still’ is about lifelong best-friendship and striving to protect it from the inevitable changes that come with time,” says Georgia. “It’s about having a shared vision of the future and a desire to preserve it, to see the plan for ever-lasting closeness through.”

The single arrives with a video shot and directed by Talvi Faustmann at Rosedale Heights School Of The Arts in Toronto, revisiting a place where both Georgia and Talvi certainly did some growing up. “I went back to my high school eight years after graduating to film a music video for a song I wrote about having one plan for my future,” she says. “To never lose touch with my best friend, and to keep doing what I love most. It was like I was sending a message to my teen self and letting her know – it’s working.”

MORE ABOUT GEORGIA HARMER
With wisdom and poise, Georgia Harmer arrived with the 2022 release of her acclaimed debut album Stay In Touch, an emotionally resonant collection of songs that articulates the ways in which even the most fleeting experiences can forge bonds between strangers, create families out of friends, and one by one form the joys and sorrows that make up a life. Spanning intimate folk and strummy country to sophisticated jazz and pop-kissed rock, Harmer and her band created musical landscapes that live up to the lyrical richness of her songwriting, and quickly established herself as a voice to transcend eras and genres with her ability to purely enchant. Georgia’s unforgettable voice is singular, gliding along a range of emotion from soft distorted rockers to bucolic ballads with windswept ease. Already a seasoned performer, Georgia has toured alongside City And Colour, Broken Social Scene, Bahamas, The Paper Kites, Haley Blais, Dan Mangan, Basia Bulat, Tim Baker, The Ballroom Thieves, and more.

FOLK-POP SINGER-SONGWRITER CINZIA & THE ECLIPSE EMBRACES CHANGE ON ANTHEMIC NEW SINGLE “HOME”

Photo Credit : Cassandra Popescu // DOWNLOAD HIGH-RES

Montreal-born, Toronto-based folk-pop act Cinzia & the Eclipse is excited to return with her dynamic new single “Home”, the first since her brilliant EP Springland. Previously available as a Bandcamp exclusive, the release comes at an inspiring time for the emerging artist serving as a momentous alt-folk anthem that refuses to back down from difficult choices but instead charging forward with confidence.

“‘Home’ is about leaning into the uncomfortable parts of growth instead of avoiding it”, Cinzia shares. “It’s an anthem towards change and putting yourself first to do what is right for you even when it’s difficult”.

The new single is a timely release for Cinzia, as change is something that has been embraced by the artist over the last year; re-discovering herself in a new city following the end of a relationship, stepping foot onto major festival stages, and embracing the challenges that come with being an independent artist. Fortunately, the anthemic spirit and tenacious folk-rock momentum of “Home” provides the soundtrack for the bittersweet feeling of leaving home to experience the journey of self-discovery and chasing a dream.

ABOUT CINZIA & THE ECLIPSE
Mirroring the cathartic reassurance of a close friend during tough times or the celebratory energy of a meaningful connection, Cinzia & the Eclipse strips away the ostentatious flare of modern songwriting to reveal the relatable side of relationships, self-discovery, and growth with her music.

The Montreal-born, Toronto-based artist released her debut single in 2018 with the help of long-time friend/collaborator Luca Liberatore, and Cinzia quickly found her audience with the single “No Matter”, reaching over 6 million streams through editorial placements.

Cinzia’s signature sound of blending pop and organic folk is redefined and has even greater depth as she continues to charm and dazzle her listeners with her latest album Springland. Her iconic vocal tone and playful phrasing have established her as one to watch as she finds inspiration from heartbreak, nostalgia, and the human condition.

Since the release, Cinzia & the Eclipse has dazzled audiences with her music, from cozy living room settings to one of Canada's largest festivals, Ottawa Bluesfest. Following a summer of live dates, including SRXP (Quebec City) and Italfest (Montreal), and with more music on the way, Cinzia & the Eclipse is quickly proving to be a star-studded name.
