Bernice, the Toronto-based project of vocalist/songwriter Robin Dann, today shares new single “David” taken from the band’s forthcoming Puff EP, their first release for Arts & Crafts, due out June 16. Premiering today via Noisey, Dann explains the intricacies of “David” both as the track name and as an ode to sadness:

“David is the name I chose to be everyone at once. He was a king of Scotland, the King of Israel, 'beloved' boy,” Dann explains. “I wanted the name to be a symbol of the lows that everyone can feel, but some feel so much more deeply than others. The song is a sort of ode to sadness, and to all of the ugly and beautiful layers it brings to life.”

Co-produced by Grammy-winning producer Shawn Everette (Alabama Shakes) and Matt Smith (Owen Pallett), Puff is 5 of 11 songs to be released in 2017, and presents a thicker, colorful side of Bernice's sound.

MORE ABOUT BERNICE

Born to a musical family, the daughter of a symphony harpist and the former Toronto Symphony Orchestra's principal violist, and a graduate of Goldsmiths' MA in Music, Dann's background, formal training, and experimental sensibilities developed into Bernice's sparse arrangements and pop-minded songwriting, often following curious and unexpected paths.

Bernice’s members and collaborators including longtime Owen Pallett collaborator Thom Gill (keyboard/sampler) as well as Colin Fisher (guitar), Daniel Fortin (bass), Philippe Melanson (drums), and Felicity Williams (supporting vocals). All are professional musicians from Toronto's music community and members of Owen Pallett, DIANA, John Southworth, Bahamas, Martha Wainwright, The Barr Brothers, and many others.

Bernice have been performing actively since late 2010 and have released one full-length album (what was that, 2011), an EP (when I know how to climb, 2013), and a “cassingle” in 2015, all released independently. Bernice’s single “St Lucia”, released in November of 2016, received praise from Zane Lowe, Stereogum, and The Fader, and the follow up single “Don't Wanna Be European”, released in February of  2017, was praised by Pitchfork, who said Bernice “crafts intricate, dream-like music from deeply emotional lyrics and woozy electronic beats.”  The bands upcoming Puff EP and upcoming album were co-produced by Grammy Award-winner Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, Lucius) and Matt Smith (Owen Pallett).

MONTREAL’S SHE-DEVILS SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM DUE OUT MAY 19 VIA ARBUTUS RECORDS

TOUR DATES BEGIN MAY 17

PRE-ORDER SHE-DEVILS HERE

“She-Devils are aware of some future truth that the rest of us aren’t privy to.” - NME

“intimate, dusty hybrid pop that searches for cosmic meaning in vintage sounds” – The FADER

“She-Devils…are creating a new way forward for tape looping. The group…dive into the souls of the samples they use, possessing them and finding otherworldly new emotions.” – Pitchfork

"She-Devils evoked the '70s and '80s electro-punk minimalism of Suicide and Soft Cell with an austere but riveting presentation." – Chicago Tribune

Earlier this week, Montreal’s She-Devils premiered “You Don’t Know” via the Strombo Show on CBC, and today, a week ahead of the release of their eagerly anticipated self-titled debut album, they are pleased to share the new video for “Hey Boy” courtesy of Hero Magazine.. The duo directed the video themselves, as with all their videos, and this focused vision creates a style that is very much in tune with the song. Bright and bombastic colours influenced by the art of Yayoi Kusama, 90s kids TV and 60s ye-ye music videos (a la Brigitte Bardot and Serge Gainsbourg in Comic Strip).

Through primitive electronic gear, hypnotist vocals, and an “amusement park of sounds,” Kyle Jukka and Audrey Ann Boucher construct a fun-house world of beautiful chaos. The music is built from original sonics inspired by everything from Iggy Pop to Madonna to T-Rex to Can, as well as the romantic longing of ‘60s yé-yé.

The pair met four years ago while living at a music rehearsal space in the Mile-Ex neighbourhood of Montreal. The band played gigs for about eight months though they did not record right away. Making music together meant creating their own rules and taking things one-step at a time. Following instinct is a crucial part of She-Devils’ identity.

Striving to make music that feels “as visual as possible,” the band hopes to strap listeners into a rollercoaster ride “with Audrey’s voice as the centrepiece to cling to.” The duo are inspired by the cinema and art of Gregg Araki, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, John Waters, and Quentin Tarantino. They direct their own videos. Audrey creates the artwork that accompanies the music. Her self-taught style evolved by watching hours of Disney movies, The Simpsons, and Powerpuff Girls.

Audrey is also musically self-taught. In fact, she had never even played music before forming She-Devils. “I’ve always seen music from the perspective of an artist or music lover rather than that of a musician,” she explains. “When I sing over a loop, I don’t feel like I'm in control of what I do, or that I am cerebrally engaged with making music, it's more like my subconscious is completely taking over my mind and it just comes out of my dreams.”

ROSE COUSINS SHARES NEW VIDEO FOR “GRACE”

WATCH AND SHARE “GRACE” HERE

INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED NEW ALBUM, NATURAL CONCLUSION, OUT NOW VIA OUTSIDE MUSIC

“The simplicity of these songs is deceiving; as sparse as they feel, her voice draws you in until you realize you are at the heart of the storm” - The Guardian

“deeply caresses her exquisite vocals through a dozen songs that form an exploratory, intimate meditation on the mysteries of being human” - LA Times

"When Rose Cousins sings she soars and swoops, never to show off but always in service to the song" - The Washington Post

Just in time for the Mother’s Day weekend, JUNO Award winning songwriter Rose Cousins is sharing the new video for “Grace” directed by Jenna MacMillan from her latest, internationally acclaimed album, Natural Conclusion. “The video enhances the heart of the song: regret, humility, atonement, forgiveness, the plight of being human,” says Cousins. “The experience for me, is enhanced by the generosity of the truly meaningful cast of the choir.”

“I had this video idea for ‘Grace’,” continues Cousins. “Me, solo at a piano in a church with a choir that is revealed at the end. I was intrigued by the videos that PEI filmmaker Jenna MacMillan was making for my friend Kinley Dowling so I dug deeper into her work, was very impressed and also thrilled at the idea of working with someone from home.”

“The making of it is a perfect small town story of needing help and the community showing up to make it happen. We contacted the church, collected friends and family and made a beautiful thing. The choir includes my Mum and Sister, a friend I’ve known since kindergarten, one of the first friends I made in University, several PEI musician friends (including Kinley), a former CBC journalist, a retired theatre director, a friend’s daughter.”

Out now via Outside Music, The Guardian says of Rose Cousins’ Natural Conclusion, “…her voice draws you in until you realize you are at the heart of the storm,” while The Washington Post notes that "When Rose Cousins sings she soars and swoops, never to show off but always in service to the song." No Depression furthers, “Cousins and Henry have created an emotional landscape full of beauty and conquest. It is formidable.”

On Natural Conclusion, Rose Cousins steps boldly forward, a fully mature writer and artist in her next great stride. Cousins enlisted Grammy Award winning producer Joe Henry for the recording of Natural Conclusion. She and Henry each gathered trusted colleagues and met in Toronto. They were joined in studio by engineer Ryan Freeland, drummer Jay Bellerose, bassist David Pitch (Bonnie Raitt, Billy Bragg), pianist Aaron Davis (Holly Cole), and guitar player Gord Tough (Kathleen Edwards, Sarah Harmer). Also lending their talents to the recording were touring mates Asa Brosius (Anais Mitchell, Heavy Blinkers), and Zachariah Hickman (Josh Ritter, Ray Lamontagne). Kinley Dowling (Hey Rosetta!) added strings in the studio and joined the choir that also included Hickman and longtime friends Jill Barber, Caroline Brookes (Good Lovelies), and Miranda Mullholland (Great Lake Swimmers).
