DOUBLE-ALBUM, NONSENSE AND HEARTACHE, OUT NOW VIA LATENT RECORDINGS

CANADIAN TOUR DATES CONTINUE APR 28

“...it's clear that Nonsense and Heartache is a no-nonsense affair through
and through.” - Exclaim!

“...the striking duality of the album features the textures of a bold, bluesy electric sound in Nonsense simmered by the raw, subdued acoustics of Heartache.” - Spill Magazine

“This album speaks to a lifetime of experience pondering the depths of Townes Van Zandt lyrics and listening to lost Dylan tapes. Whether racing down a desert highway on a shimmering afternoon or drinking whiskey under an old Budweiser neon, Nonsense and Heartache will be your perfect companion.” - Hard Rock RPM

“The only problem with these albums is trying to decide which to play first.” - Bob Mersereau

Today, celebrated songwriter Jerry Leger is sharing the new video for “The Big Smoke Blues” from the ‘Nonsense’ side of his latest double-album, Nonsense And Heartache. For the video Leger says they “wanted to capture the lead character discovering a more obscure artist and a social circle he relates to, stemming from a record playing in the local shop. We filmed the record store scenes in one of my favourite spots, Discovery Records, which I think is a fitting title.”

Leger recently celebrated the release of Nonsense And Heartache as part of the Latent Lounge, a series of shows at The Monarch Tavern that celebrated the 35th anniversary of Latent Recordings with performances by Skydiggers, Cowboy Junkies, Lee Harvey Osmond, HarpAcash & The Morals, Ivy Mairi, and Thompson Wilson. This week Leger will continue on tour across Canada to support the album. Full tour dates can be found below.

Out now via Latent Recordings, Nonsense And Heartache is equal parts primal rock and roll, and raw, confessional balladry. The separation between the two is evident by the album’s title, and it is in fact two distinct collections of songs presented on two slabs of vinyl. In many ways, Jerry Leger’s artistic path has been leading up to this ambitious display of both sides of his musical personality, fueled by countless nights playing in clubs and bars with a loyal band equally committed to keeping rock and roll’s original flame burning.

Employing his distinctive live-off-the-floor recording approach on Nonsense And Heartache, producer Michael Timmins (Cowboy Junkies) focused on capturing the chemistry between Leger and his core musicians: multi-instrumentalist James McKie, bassist Dan Mock, and drummer Kyle Sullivan, along with guest vocalist Angie Hilts. The ragged-but-right results perfectly complement Leger’s tales of characters on the fringe, attempting to unravel life’s mysteries.

Leger describes the album himself by saying, “Mike Timmins came up with the idea of doing a double album, but it’s really two different records – Nonsense and Heartache – packaged into one. He had the idea to record one album as electric, bluesy, dirty rock and roll, with James and I on electric guitars, Dan on electric bass and Kyle bashing away. The other album was intended to be more of a singer/songwriter record with me on acoustic guitar or piano, James on fiddle or lap steel, Dan on upright and Kyle using brushes and percussion. So, it’s not an ego trip for either of us. It just felt like it made more sense to put them together, plus the fact that neither is overly long, just about 35 minutes each.”

FIGURE WALKING, THE NEW BAND FROM POLARIS MUSIC PRIZE NOMINATED SONGWRITER GREG MACPHERSON, DEBUT LP THE BIG OTHER DUE OUT APRIL 28 VIA DISINTEGRATION RECORDS

Today, Figure Walking are streaming their upcoming debut LP, The Big Other, a week ahead of its release courtesy of Exclaim!. Figure Walking is the two-piece of Polaris Music Prize nominated songwriter Greg MacPherson and drummer Rob Gardiner. Based in Winnipeg, infamous as Canada's coldest, most racist city, they have taken social criticism and justice to heart with The Big Other.

STREAM THE BIG OTHER HERE VIA EXCLAIM!

Due out April 28 via Disintegration Records, The Big Other accomplishes the rare feat of presenting big ideas on a foundation of dance beats, electric guitar, and storytelling. The jagged, arthouse post-punk of “Submarines” and “Spring Thaw” demand movement. “Blue World”, with its gauzy swells of aquatic guitar, thumping bass lines, and vivid soundscapes, is a hopeful anthem to reconciliation and possibility. “Singapore”, puts the average hot-blooded North American on a plain dropping into the Pacific, where lust and the no longer exotic combine in the celebrity image of Janet Jackson and a renewed 30 something romance.

If there’s a mission statement drilled into The Big Other, it comes at the surprise ending of “Funeral”, a swirling barrage of cheerleading gang vocals that command, “let’s just try to celebrate, dance until this all makes sense.”

In MacPherson and Gardiner’s own words, “Figure Walking is our attempt as artists to focus on who we are in the present and to take ownership of what we’re bringing into the world, with an eye on a better future.”

MacPherson is a G7 Welcoming Committee Records alumni whose music was never strictly ideological or easily categorized. His past two solo albums, Mr. Invitation and Fireball, have both been nominated for the Polaris Music Prize.

Bernice, the Toronto-based project of vocalist/songwriter Robin Dann, today announces Puff – the band's first EP for Arts & Crafts, due out June 16, 2017. Co-produced by Grammy-winning producer Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes) and Matt Smith (Owen Pallett), Puff is 5 of 11 songs to be released in 2017, and presents a thicker, colourful side of Bernice's sound.

Along with the announcement of the new EP, Bernice also share the new single “Talking About Her”. Vocalist/songwriter Robin Dann explains the track as being about “friends talking about friends, talking about friends. And why we all do it and why we can't help it. And how it's sometimes hurtful, but ultimately, probably, ok, and how, really, we just love each other.”

Recording Puff live to tape at Breakglass studios in Montreal with Matt Smith engineering, the band was together in the central room with Dann and Felicity Williams (supporting vocals) on either side of the vocal "booths" -- Williams in a smoky vestibule with glass doors, and Dann in the kitchen with a window, beside a big potted palm. Following the sessions, Dann and drummer Phil Melanson then brought the digitized stems (excluding track 'David', which the band and Matt did all production for) to producer Shawn Everett in Los Angeles just in time for Valentine's Day (and a half hour long televised police car chase which passed by the studio's front door) and worked out each song's sound.

Bernice is currently on tour supporting Charlotte Day Wilson and is performing at Canadian Music Week tonight (Tuesday, 4/19) and tomorrow (Wednesday, 4/20) and Mod Club in Toronto as part of Canadian Music Week.

More About Bernice:

Born to a musical family, the daughter of a symphony harpist and the former Toronto Symphony Orchestra's principal violist, and a graduate of Goldsmiths' MA in Music, Dann's background, formal training, and experimental sensibilities developed into Bernice's sparse arrangements and pop-minded songwriting, often following curious and unexpected paths.

Bernice’s members and collaborators including longtime Owen Pallett collaborator Thom Gill (keyboard/sampler) as well as Colin Fisher (guitar), Daniel Fortin (bass), Philippe Melanson (drums), and Felicity Williams (supporting vocals). All are professional musicians from Toronto's music community and members of Owen Pallett, DIANA, John Southworth, Bahamas, Martha Wainwright, The Barr Brothers, and many others.

Bernice have been performing actively since late 2010 and have released one full-length album (what was that, 2011), an EP (when I know how to climb, 2013), and a “cassingle” in 2015, all released independently. Bernice’s single “St Lucia”, released in November of 2016, received praise from Zane Lowe, Stereogum, and The Fader, and the follow up single “Don't Wanna Be European”, released in February of  2017, was praised by Pitchfork, who said Bernice “crafts intricate, dream-like music from deeply emotional lyrics and woozy electronic beats.”  The bands upcoming Puff EP and upcoming album were co-produced by Grammy Award-winner Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, Lucius) and Matt Smith (Owen Pallett).
