“Her gorgeous voice projects confidently as she explores deep yet relatable autobiographical themes, while her instrumentals deconstruct pop and R&B like a more polished Evy Jane or a less eccentric Grimes.” Georgia Straight

Following a week of incredible performances and praise from critics and fans alike at SXSW and a North American tour with, Tei Shi has also announced another round of tour dates this Spring, headlining shows in NYC, Boston and DC as well as a performance at Field Trip in Toronto on June 3.

Set for release on March 31 via Arts & Crafts, Crawl Space was written and recorded over a year and a half, the album traces a much wider arc, from Tei Shi's earliest musical explorations to this, her first long player. Growth is never easy, though, and if the title makes the process sound difficult, even claustrophobic, that's because it was. In fact, there is a palpable physicality surrounding this record, and it reveals itself everywhere: from the album's song titles - “Keep Running,” “Lift Me” – to its rhythms, to its astonishing cover art. Constant motion is a fact of life. A real, physical crawl space fits only one person and demands that person move forward, out and through it. Tei Shi's debut evokes that feeling and the experience of centering oneself, changing focus.

Born in Buenos Aires, Valerie Teicher (aka Tei Shi) spent her childhood in Argentina and Colombia before moving to Vancouver and Montreal, cultivating a strong artistic sensibility from a young age. During her studies at Massachusetts' Berklee College of Music she began to realize her full potential as a performer, and by the time she moved to New York City after graduation, the Tei Shi project was born.

JERRY LEGER STREAMS UPCOMING DOUBLE ALBUM AHEAD OF RELEASE DATE

STREAM NONSENSE AND HEARTACHE HERE VIA EXCLAIM!

DOUBLE-ALBUM DUE OUT MARCH 31 VIA LATENT RECORDINGS

MORE TOUR DATES ADDED TO CANADIAN ROUTE. TOUR DATES BEGIN APRIL 5

Due out March 31 via Latent Recordings, acclaimed songwriter Jerry Leger is streaming his upcoming double album Nonsense And Heartache, ahead of its release date courtesy of Exclaim!.

Nonsense And Heartache is equal parts primal rock and roll, and raw, confessional balladry. The separation between the two is evident by the album’s title, and it is in fact two distinct collections of songs presented on two slabs of vinyl. In many ways, Jerry Leger’s artistic path has been leading up to this ambitious display of both sides of his musical personality, fueled by countless nights playing in clubs and bars with a loyal band equally committed to keeping rock and roll’s original flame burning.

STREAM NONSENSE AND HEARTACHE HERE VIA EXCLAIM!

Employing his distinctive live-off-the-floor recording approach on Nonsense And Heartache, producer Michael Timmins (Cowboy Junkies) focused on capturing the chemistry between Leger and his core musicians: multi-instrumentalist James McKie, bassist Dan Mock, and drummer Kyle Sullivan, along with guest vocalist Angie Hilts. The ragged-but-right results perfectly complement Leger’s tales of characters on the fringe, attempting to unravel life’s mysteries.

Leger describes the album himself by saying, “Mike Timmins came up with the idea of doing a double album, but it’s really two different records – Nonsense and Heartache – packaged into one. He had the idea to record one album as electric, bluesy, dirty rock and roll, with James and I on electric guitars, Dan on electric bass and Kyle bashing away. The other album was intended to be more of a singer/songwriter record with me on acoustic guitar or piano, James on fiddle or lap steel, Dan on upright and Kyle using brushes and percussion. So, it’s not an ego trip for either of us. It just felt like it made more sense to put them together, plus the fact that neither is overly long, just about 35 minutes each.”

Leger will celebrate the release with a hometown show on April 5 as part of Latent Recordings 35th anniversary celebration Latent Lounge - a very special live concert series in Toronto at The Monarch Tavern. The series will include headlining performances from iconic Canadian acts Cowboy Junkies and Skydiggers as well as multi JUNO Award nominated and Polaris Music Prize listed Lee Harvey Osmond. Openers include label mates HarpAcash & The Morals, Latent alumni Ivy Mairi, and special guest Thompson Wilson. Full Canadian tour dates can be found below.

SHE-DEVILS ANNOUNCE SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM

MONTREAL’S SHE-DEVILS SELF-TITLED DEBUT ALBUM DUE OUT MAY 19 VIA ARBUTUS RECORDS

TOUR DATES BEGIN APRIL 20

“intimate, dusty hybrid pop that searches for cosmic meaning in vintage sounds” – The FADER

“She-Devils…are creating a new way forward for tape looping. The group…dive into the souls of the samples they use, possessing them and finding otherworldly new emotions.” – Pitchfork

"She-Devils evoked the '70s and '80s electro-punk minimalism of Suicide and Soft Cell with an austere but riveting presentation." – Chicago Tribune

She-Devils are excited to announce their self-titled debut album on Arbutus Records out May 19. Along with the announcement, they’re sharing a brand new single titled “Hey Boy”. The song fuses surf guitar with swirling sonics from Kyle Jukka and Audrey Ann Boucher’s preternatural voice. “Hey Boy” follows the recent single, “The World Laughs”, with its accompanying video directed by the band themselves who recently wrapped a successful SXSW.

Through primitive electronic gear, hypnotist vocals, and an “amusement park of sounds”, She-Devils construct a fun-house world of beautiful chaos. The music is built from original sonics inspired by everything from Iggy Pop to Madonna to T-Rex to Can, as well as the romantic longing of ‘60s yé-yé.

The pair met four years ago while living at a music rehearsal space in the Mile-Ex neighborhood of Montreal. The band played gigs for about eight months though they did not record right away. Making music together meant creating their own rules and taking things one-step at a time. Following instinct is a crucial part of She-Devils’ identity.

PRE-ORDER SHE-DEVILS HERE

Striving to make music that feels “as visual as possible,” the band hopes to strap listeners into a rollercoaster ride “with Audrey’s voice as the centrepiece to cling to.” The duo are inspired by the cinema and art of Gregg Araki, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol, John Waters, and Quentin Tarantino. They direct their own videos. Audrey creates the artwork that accompanies the music. Her self-taught style evolved by watching hours of Disney movies, The Simpsons and Powerpuff Girls.

Audrey is also musically self-taught. In fact, she had never even played music before forming She-Devils. “I’ve always seen music from the perspective of an artist or music lover rather than that of a musician,” she explains. “When I sing over a loop, I don’t feel like I'm in control of what I do, or that I am cerebrally engaged with making music, it's more like my subconscious is completely taking over my mind and it just comes out of my dreams.”

With She-Devils, the duo have created a channel to explore the sensory world, actualize aesthetic fantasies and alchemize pieces of history into entirely new sensations.
