BUSTY AND THE BASS - FOREVER NEVER CARES
LABEL : ARTS & CRAFTS // RELEASE : NOVEMBER 17, 2023
10-piece soul-jazz collective Busty and the Bass return with the shimmering, groovy summertime single "Wandering Lies". The sunny indie R&B track is driven by a rolling piano line, huge snare hits, multiple vocalists, and a soulful roaming saxophone solo. The track is about letting go of the fears and lies we find ourselves trapped in and allow for space to make way for love. It speaks of the necessity to give up control and ego in order to “chase away the blues” while highlighting the importance of living life in our own way, not dictated by anyone else or any societal norms. Continuing their cross-genre explorations, "Wandering Lies" sees the group deftly navigate the new waves of indie jazz and R&B alongside artists like Hiatus Kaiyote, Thundercat, and Kamasi Washington.
“Wandering Lies” is about letting go of the fears and self-fulfilling lies that we find ourselves trapped in and allowing space to make way for love. It speaks of the necessity to give up control and self identifiers rooted in the ego in order to “chase away the blues”. It also highlights the importance of living life in our own way, not dictated by anyone else or any societal norms. The track is partly inspired by the spiritual teachings of the psychologist / yogi Ram Dass, specifically relating to his seminal 1971 counterculture book Be Here Now.
For the sprawling multi-national soul-jazz collective, Busty and the Bass, collaboration has always been at the forefront of their art. Formed at the University of Montreal over a decade ago, the group is now scattered across four North American cities from coast to coast. The band’s two studio albums, both produced by Grammy Award-winner Neal Pogue, have been praised in equal parts by tastemaker press (Complex, OkayPlayer) and established media (Billboard, American Songwriter). Over the years, they have collaborated with legends George Clinton, Macy Gray, Earth Wind & Fire, members of Slum Village, and exciting new voices like Polaris Music Prize winners Cadence Weapon and Pierre Kwenders, and most recently, Philadelphia rapper STS. After an original member left the band during the pandemic, the collective used the opportunity to expand their ranks for the first time in years, invigorating the band with a newfound creative energy and approach. Now, the ten-piece collective includes new vocalists Mel Pacifico, Wayne Tennant, and Jordan Brown, with many songs featuring up to all five vocalists interchanging verses and harmonizing together. Along with these new voices come new ideas and influences that have inspired the collective's most dynamic and expansive album yet. The new record, due out in spring 2023, continues their singular experimentation with soul, funk, jazz, and dance music.
